In an earlier thread Jan mentioned this about the P2 recorded files:

”They are DIF files, just like any DV files…
They have an MXF wrapper, so that if the system needs that, it knows what to do.

I have to admit I’m not familiar with what a DIF file is.
Could someone give some clarification on DIF files, and their compatability with some of the major post programs out there?

If these files are ‘edit ready’ for FCP, is it safe to assume these same files could be pulled into any other program that accepts FCP compatible files (I’m thinking about programs like After Effects).

Also, if they are ready to drop right into FCP and Avid Xpress HD does that mean that we are recording quicktime based files to the P2 cards? If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be safe to assume P2 recorded files will work directly in any program that is quicktime based?

AFAIK FCP 5 has specifically a translator to take the MXF native files and add a .mov header to them. They are definitely not native QuickTime(or Windows Media) on the P2 as shot. You would most likely need to do this first before loading into other QuickTime applications.

They are raw media files with MXF metadata.
It is not a Quicktime file. It is more analogous to *.DV files. Incidently, QT knows by default how to handle *.DV files. QT 7 might be able to handle DIFs.

Theoretically it can be used by any application that can interpret MXF file structure AND has the codec [DV25/DV50/100] to decompress the file.

Avid handles MXF natively. You can drag and drop the file in to a bin, all media and metadata is sorted for you automatically.
