Try re-saving your PS document, then either import it back in and re-edit it in your timeline, or try to reconnect media. Bright pink and/or green can be a possible sign of media corruption.
It might not be a bad idea to dump your render files, if it wouldn’t be a huge inconvenience to re-render.
Try that. Post back if it doesn’t help!

Capture Now really should only be used as a last resort when there is no timecode or for a similar reason. It shouldn’t be your status quo for capturing. I don’t know if that’s what you do, but in case it is…
It can create more problems than it might seem to solve, as you have witnessed.
You run the risk of losing far less time by breaking your tape up into 10-15 minute chunks, or at the very least setting in and out points and giving FCP some hard numbers to deal with. What is likely happening is FCP is hitting the end of the tape where the timecode stops and freaking out. You can avoid this by setting an outpoint that is at least a few frames before the timecode actually runs out.

Was it still under warranty? Apple Care? Almost any Dual 2.5 G5 should still be under Apple Care! Where’s this tech from?

I guess you don’t need to worry about it, then…
However, I’m a complete worrier, and I would export it out anyway. I’ve had MPEG1 files that started out “playing back fine”, but ended up corrupting themselves and my project file. At 2 in the morning, the day of my deadline….
Some things FCP only pretends to like in the beginning. MPEG1 and JPEGs are the two I’ve had the most trouble with over the years.

What kinds of hard drives, how are they formatted, and what kind of FCP file?
You should run your FCP Project file from your internal boot drive (unless you use a SAN, which it doesn’t sound like you are doing…)
If they are firewire drives, know that Apple doesn’t approve the use of FW drives for media storage. It works for some, but not reliably for all. If they are USB drives, that may be your problem. USB 2.0 isn’t fast enough.
You should also reformat any new drive using the Apple Disk Utility, regardless if it comes out of the box saying it’s formatted OS X Extended.

If you must use firewire drives to store your media, you may want to look into getting an additional firewire bus for your Mac from a place like wiebetech.com. Cramming all that data through the one on-board firewire bus that ships with all Macs is asking for throughput problems.
Some have no issues with it, but many do. It’s one of the reasons Apple doesn’t approve firewire for use as media drives with FCP. If you must use firewire for media storage, do you self a huge favor and make sure you unmount the drive before shutting down or even putting the computer to sleep. Reformat it periodically when you are between projects, and never store your project file on the drive, unless it’s a triple-redundant backup.
Otherwise, follow Rob’s advice. It’s all good stuff!
