  • FCP Keyboard Stickers???

Posted by David Mercer on February 18, 2006 at 10:34 am

Hi guys. I want to add functions to the F keys on a FCP keyboard. I thought the best option would be to buy a set of ready-made stickers for a G5 keyboard. Does anyone know of a company that produces such items?
I was also considering using my Avid keyboard and mapping the FCP keys to that… so it would also be helpful if any one can point me in the right direction for Avid G5 keyboard stickers.

    Thanks in advance.

    There are FCP keyboards, too.

Google “Final Cut Pro Keyboard” (no quotes, obviously…)

See if there’s anything in there that might strike your fancy!

    This site has some options:

    https://www.logickeyboard.com

They sell a whole keyboard for $100 or just the keys for $60 and you can replace them yourself on your keyboard. (Check bhphotovideo.com, I’ve seen them cheaper there before.)

I’ve seen stickers around before, but it’s probably not a great idea. With all the pushing of buttons, eventually they start to peel up at the edges or slide around a little on the keys.

Even though it’s possible to remap the whole keyboard, I’m not a fan of totally changing the keystrokes to match another program. Once you do stuff like that you’ll eventually find that you can edit just fine on YOUR Final Cut system, but you start to struggle on everyone else’s. When someone asks you “Do you edit on Final Cut?” do you want to answer “Sort-of?”

Yeah I was in two minds whether to map the keyboard to resemble an avid configuration. Think I’ll stick with the FCP config.

I may have been a little unclear as to my requirements. I actually have an FCP keyboard but I want to add extra functions to the ‘F’ keys (i.e. F1 F2 F3 etc) at the top of the keyboard, hence the idea of purchasing relevant stickers or keys as a visual aid.

    Thanks for your help.

    David,

I think the only ones available are written in American…

Ah, I see what you want.

Honestly? What I’d do is pop the keys out, use white out on them, and then write on them with a very, very fine marker pen. That would be pertty permanent.

You can do that if it makes you feel more comfortable. The cool thing is you can save your configuration, tote it around with you on a jump drive, and at whatever FCP station you are working, you can load up your keyboard config and away you go.

This is a little off topic, but I thought I would just throw it out there.

Final Cut Pro 4 Default Keyboard Set-up .PDF is the best color coded printable keyboard map I have ever found. You can open it up in Mac OS X Preview or Adobe Acrobat and do a key word search like ‘mark’ and it will take you to every instance of mark like ‘mark in’ or ‘mark out’. You could leave it open in your .PDF reader and just Command+Tab between FCP and your .PDF reader.

At a quick glance you can see what key combinations are available for F1, F2, F3, F4, etc.

If you had a .PDF editor you could type your new functions in there for reference.

    FYI,

I don’t know if you are still looking for keyboard stickers but I stumbled across these at Editorskeys.com
