July 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm in reply to: Copy and Pasting clips on the timeline (seems so simple doesn’t it?)[Michael Aranyshev] “Set IN/OUT on the timeline. Copy.”
That works well, just be aware that it will copy/paste every track in that portion of the timeline.

[Darryl Thomson] “Is there any way of batch naming the files with a prefix or suffix like the project name? It’s a real pain having to do this for each imported piece of footage. “
You can in future set the first four digits of the eight digit clip names before shooting. See “Clip” on page 108 of the EX1 manual. Those four spaces can be upper or lower case letters, numbers, underscore or hyphen.
A bit limited perhaps, but with some thought it could be quite useful.

You might want to take a look at DH-Box. You can certainly built the effect in FCP by hand, but this is an inexpensive tool to perhaps ease your way:

I find my MXO – Powerbook – OS 10.4.11 and FCP 5 combination can get a bit finicky when things change. I usually have to restart after changing the codec I’m viewing, for example. I wasn’t clear from reading your post if you checked the View Menu settings after your crash and restart. External Video often resets to off on my set up, and Refreshing video devices sometimes helps me out too.

You could make a clone of your drive (verified of course), do a clean install of the OS and use the Migration Assistant to pull everything off of the clone. You can bring over accounts, passwords, documents, music, photos etc etc.

Thank you for the information everyone. There’s always some trade off when moving from one workflow to another I guess. Right now on this old 1.67 GHz PB I have two SD cameras feeding two separate feeds into Scopebox 2.0, each with its own preview and waveform palettes, side by side on my screen. Quite useful!
I’ll figure out some way.
Thanks,

No worries Scot, I should make my questions clearer. Sounds like you are right, I’ll have to bring along one of my V3HD boxes when I need to get into a laptop live.

[Michael Palmer] “No, there is only one encoder inside the camera and it can’t compress two different compression levels at the same time. “
Thanks Michael. To clarify, it won’t send the 35Mb stream out live via 1394 either, correct?

[Scot Lenter] “Does your laptop have a USB port?
Then what’s the problem?
“Thanks for the reply Scot. I’m trying to see a live feed from the camera that I can monitor on the laptop. I’m not aware that that can be done via usb.

What is the advantage of converting to DVCPro HD? “It takes a lot less computer power to play and edit with, because every frame is distinct. HDV’s “Group of Pictures” approach makes for small file size, but more computations as the current frame is usually interpolated from the previous and next I frames in the GoP structure.

another editor I know with teh same camera and deck, down converts to NTSC when she captures. Is that an option? PRO and CONs? “You wrote that you need to deliver an HD copy, so it doesn’t seem to make sense to down convert. If you only had to deliver in SD (and you said this was destined for internal company use via DVD) then that might be a very good option considering your current equipment and the workflow you’re used to.
