  • Copy and Pasting clips on the timeline (seems so simple doesn’t it?)

Posted by John Zentmeyer on July 11, 2008 at 11:53 pm

I am trying to find a way to copy a much smaller portion of a clip that already is on the timeline to that same timeline. I can only get it to copy the whole clip, not the portion I need. Any way to accomplish this seemingly simple copy/paste? I just want a copy of timeline clip “A” to be much shorter before pasting as FCP will not let me insert the copy within the space I have made for it to fit . I also need to do this about 50 times on this project or I would just work around it and not ask the question.

Associated dysfunctional question: Is there a way to load the original master clip into the viewer (so I can set different in/out points) instead of the timeline clip when opening the timeline clip into viewer?

Try pressing “f”. That’s Match Frame. It will take you back to the original footage, you can edit IN/OUT, and put back into the timeline.

double clicking a clip opens that particular instance of that clip… so In/out changes reflect on the timeline

Set IN/OUT on the timeline. Copy.

That works well, just be aware that it will copy/paste every track in that portion of the timeline.

It will only copy/paste the tracks that have the auto select turned on. Simply turn them off for the tracks you don’t want.

Well, that makes perfect sense! (slapping forehead…. Doh!)

    Thanks Arnie!

Thanks, the “match frame” method seems to work best. Using the in/out on the timeline method still copies the whole clip and not just the part of the clip from the “in” to the “out”. (at least for me it does). but… thank you all for your help.

Clicking on a clip just because it contains some frames you want to use is a bad habit. Command-Shift-A to deselect.
