My Powerbook opens HDV (the Sony flavor) just fine. Imports it over Firewire with no problem. I don’t think I’d want to do much editing on it, but it plays the files for sure.

Also take a look at Lynda.com where you can find books, dvds and online tutorials. A friend of mine is working with some of Larry Jordan’s tutorials online and she is very pleased with the material and the process. She’s also done some Photoshop tutorials there. While you don’t get to keep the material like a book or dvd purchase, a subscription gives you access to a plethora of tutorials for many software titles.

  • Interesting. Your original post said nothing about needing to batch process. You get a decent suggestion from a helpful forum member, and you answer in a sarcastic huff?

I”d think a response something like “thanks for the idea. My problem is that I need to batch process 20 to 40 files at a time, Can QT do that?” might serve you better.

If you really think the only advantage Compressor has over iMovie is batch processing, I’d suggest you spend some time with the manual. Perhaps if you learned more about it you could produce files with sizes more suited for your purpose.

March 4, 2006 at 4:10 am in reply to: Any documentary editors?… transcription question

You can’t send anyone’s voice to a program like Macspeech, the program has to be “trained” with a voice reading prescribed text so the software can learn the person’s voice.

When I have the budget I use a transcription service. Otherwise, a good speech to text program is useful. I use Viavoice for Mac by IBM. Macspeech is another choice. The easiest way I’ve found uses two computers. I make an audio file from the tape on my Powerbook, and run Viavoice on my tower. The software came with a usb headset. I have the earpiece plugged into the Powerbook and the mic plugged into the tower. As I listen to the audio file, I repeat the words out loud as I hear them. Done.

It’s really worth the time to create the audio file instead of working from audio or video tape. It is much faster having a non-linear file that you can start and stop with a press of the space bar, as well as jog around with a click on the keypad or a press of the arrow keys. Futzing around with tape is clunky and hell on your playback machine.

One caveat…. it does take some time to get these programs to learn your voice and work properly. Don’t try it when you’re on deadline, you’re bound to get frustrated.

    Eric,

I’ll leave the timeline and rendering questions to the experts here, but regarding the fan issue I’d suggest buying a copy of Hardware Monitor or some other utility that will allow you to see what the internal temperatures are in your box. They won’t record sensor readouts while the machine is asleep, but it would be good to know what’s going on right before you sleep it.

I find my fans running their fastest when the screen saver kicks in on my two monitors. That was a surprise.

Well, I admit I stopped paying for their upgrades at version 6, but when I was still cutting on my Media 100 via the firewire daughter board I used to bring in NDF DV all the time. I never had this problem.

Have you asked over on the Media 100 forum?

February 26, 2006 at 6:07 am in reply to: garbage matte to remove text?

CHV makes a garbage matte plugin with bezier handles:
    https://www.chv-plugins.com/bezierpro.html

They also have a “clone and repair plugin” tool that could be used to copy some of the background and lay it over the text.
    https://www.chv-plugins.com/collclonepaint.html

Both of these are $49, and the clone tool is part of a larger collection (the whole collection is $49). They have some neat stuff.

[David Smith] “I had emailed the seller and was told it was not an Academic or NFS (Not for Sale) version.”

Sorry, that should read NFR – Not For Resale. Make sure what you buy is NOT Academic (Apple does not allow upgrades of Academic software) or NFR.
