  • special secret iMovie conversion (?) vs. FCP settings possibilities?

I’m not sure I know what I’m encountering here. I ripped some dvd’s and loaded them into iMovie and when I “shared” them I got great videos for output to the web – no problem – file size, resolution, etc was AOK. Now that I’m trying to do the same with FCP outputting to Compressor I’m gettting much bigger files not suitable for fast downloads or streaming. They’re just too big when I set similar parameters. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Then don’t do it that way. Export a Quicktime self-contained or reference movie from FCP, open it in QT, set your web parameters then export a web-size version. Easy as cake.

Of course! And I could still grind my flour with mortar and pestle to bake my cakes. Sounds “easy as cake” – except that I’m doing batch processing and I need to come up with work flow standards that include the ability to compress 20-40 files at a time – otherwise I would’ve stuck with iMovie! Are you suggesting that there’s a way to work with QT to do batch compressing? Naturally, I wouldn’t be using Compressor (when I could use an easier solution like iMovie). Am I overlooking something you’re suggesting?

Interesting. Your original post said nothing about needing to batch process. You get a decent suggestion from a helpful forum member, and you answer in a sarcastic huff?

I”d think a response something like “thanks for the idea. My problem is that I need to batch process 20 to 40 files at a time, Can QT do that?” might serve you better.

If you really think the only advantage Compressor has over iMovie is batch processing, I’d suggest you spend some time with the manual. Perhaps if you learned more about it you could produce files with sizes more suited for your purpose.

If you need to batch process with Quicktime, you could use applescript (maybe Automator — I’ve not toyed with that). Maybe one of these scripts in Apple’s collection will do what you want. If not, they are easily modified.
