Thank you Todd, that makes perfect sense. Someone put a bug in the client’s ear about this, so I figured I’d best check it out to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

[Chris Poisson] “ve looked in the manual for the first question, maybe I’m not using the correct Sony language, but I want to burn timecode into a DVD dub for my client, and I can’t make it do it.”

    Chris,

I’m not sure about visible timecode in playback mode, but there is a hidden trick to send your screen data out via the analog cable in camera mode. It may help you find the trick for playback, I can’t check it as my camera is out right now. So for what it’s worth:

In camera mode, open the Camera Set menu, scroll down to Marker and set the marker to OFF. Screen data is now sent out the A/V cable. You can control what screen data is visible by pressing the Display button, lower left button (if memory serves) of the controls that reside under the LCD screen when it’s closed. (Color bars, playback controls, etc.)

    Hope that helps,
    David

  • I’m sure nobody is going to meet those prices.

I’ve used someone in California who is very good. Fast and inexpensive, by American standards. Heather Larsen: hjlarsen@sbcglobal.net

As for your workflow question. Just wanted to give an example of a different approach:

I’m doing a pro bono project at the moment and needed some translation work. Got a former Peace Corp member who knows the language to help out, but I’m in New Jersey and she’s in Utah. We’re using the cataloging program, CatDV, which builds small preview files from your digitized footage with timecode intact. She’s using the software’s “Verbatim Logger” feature to type into (while watching the preview clip from within the program) and can capture timecode with a single keystroke. I own the program, and the very nice folks at Squarebox Software granted us a temporary license for my translater.

[Chris Lupetti] “Obviously I would want to go with the 17 inch monitor display.”

Well, others have spoken to the advantages of a tower, but if portability is what you’re after, I find the 17″ machines to be rather big and heavy. I know people who love them, but for me a 15″ laptop was the way to go. (Granted, I do have a tower at the office too.)

You’re not limited to the 15″ screen at home or office, because you can drive a second monitor very well. My PB 15″ with 128MB of VRAM drives a 24″ Dell LCD, no problem. That gives me 39″ of screen real estate. On the road, you’ll have a lighter, smaller package to lug around.

  • Jeff,

Just curious, are you going to save so much money by outsourcing this job to India, that it’s really worth the extra work you have to do? Is it about something other than saving money…. like maybe this is the best transcriber you’ve ever used, or the interviews are in Hindi?

I would think there are lots of efficient, and thus cost effective transcribers right near you in L.A.

May 17, 2007 at 1:22 am in reply to: Fantom G-Force 1TB drives

Just to add my 2 cents after the fact:

I bought one of Fantom’s 500GB Titanium drives as a backup solution for my daughter. Can’t boot from it over Firewire on either her iBook or my PB G4.

It touts “Latest Generation Chipsets” right on the box too. So I wrote their tech support folks last week, and as of today I’ve gotten no response. I guess I’ll try a phone call tomorrow, but chances are I’m going to send it back.

[Rennie] “4×4 filters are linear polarizers which are stronger but they can reach black out effect.”

Actually, either linear or circular polarizing filters are available in 4×4, or any other size. For example:

Do you have the tape already playing when you hit Capture Now?

I’m shocked that nobody has addressed the last part of your initial post! After exhausting research, I’ve found that 12 year old Talisker works with both the Blackmagic and AJA codecs, and is frame rate agnostic as well (but only if used straight up).

May 11, 2007 at 8:52 pm in reply to: Can I install ONLY Final Cut onto a Powerbook?

    Tom,

You might want to consider an airline power adaptor if your flights are long. My buss powered drive really sucks up the juice.

And yes indeed, the FCP license was changed at 5.1 and permits installation on one tower and one laptop, as long as you own both and don’t use them concurrently.

    Have a fun trip!
