    Hey all,

Has anyone had experience with the Fantom G-Force 1TB drives?

I am planning to purchase a SATA Raid from MacGurus.com in the very near future, but need to start editing 2TB of footage off of something immediately (the footage is now spread out over 6 small drives borrowed from friends which I have to return to them). I was thinking of buying a couple of these Fantom Drives to start editing for a couple of weeks and then transferring over to the SATA Raid when I get it. The Fantom Drives will then serve as back-up.

Is it a good idea to edit DVCPRO50 footage off of these $339 drives?

    Thanks,
    Misha

The only folks I know using these are using them for backup devices. I had the 1TB unit here for a week and it died so we returned it and replaced it with a LaCie 2TB unit instead.

I just got one of these last week. Actually the first one I recieved was DOA and I returned it for the same unit. I’ve been editing 35Mb XDCAM HD footage with it. Well more like reviewing it as the combination of firewire 800 and my powerbook g4 1.5 doesn’t really have the juice to edit it. I have had some luck logging and marking the footage.

For me its just a stop gate for a couple of weeks as we have more editors than suites at the moment. (New suites are coming…Can’t wait to give the 8-cores a run). All the footage that I’m logging at the moment also resides on the xserve. I don’t think I would do anything mission critical with this drive.

It might be fine for DV50 footage though especially if its only for a few weeks till you get your RAID solution.

On the other hand Walter had one go down in a week and my first one came DOA….

So I guess there’s really only one question. “Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?”

Ha! Judging from you guys, it seems that with FW drives all you have is luck.

I decided to go with a couple of 2TB Lacies. You gotta hand it them, their branding and marketing somehow makes them seem more reliable than the Fantoms.

    Thanks for your feedback,
    Misha

Just to add my 2 cents after the fact:

I bought one of Fantom’s 500GB Titanium drives as a backup solution for my daughter. Can’t boot from it over Firewire on either her iBook or my PB G4.

It touts “Latest Generation Chipsets” right on the box too. So I wrote their tech support folks last week, and as of today I’ve gotten no response. I guess I’ll try a phone call tomorrow, but chances are I’m going to send it back.

    Regards,
    David
