Good of you to report back Jason. I always like to know when someone is able to forge ahead. Of all the authoring programs out there, ReelDVD is still the one I like best. It makes DVDs that work on almost any player on the market.

No one can understand Sonic’s instructions for ReelDVD. Everyone I know learned by doing the tutorials from crazypants at the link below. It will take you a few tries to get your head around it, but once you do you’ll understand how menu buttons work in all DVD authoring programs.

HDV is difficult enough as it is, but upresing SD and mixing with HDV is exponentially more difficult. Without a great deal of experience and expertise it will be very easy for you to make mistakes that will be compounded and multiplied as you get farther along.
I would advise that you carefully consider letting the market and the end product dictate your path in post-production. What type of project is this? What will be the finished length of the project? Is it for TV, DVD, theatrical, etc.? Let those factors determine how you will proceed. HDV may seem tempting, but you don’t have to choose the HDV path simply because some of your material was shot on HDV. Editing in 16×9 SD is suitable for very many projects.

Extreme has RS-422 deck control for print to tape with timecode. And, with Digibeta you have a choice using the SDI inputs (audio and video), or analog component inputs (video only), which will require analog audio output from FCP.
How are you presently monitoring HDV from your FCP timeline? If you can see a SD output to monitor, that signal can most likely be routed to the Digibeta deck.

Check the drive out below from http://www.newegg.com, you can’t get a better price anywhere, and you’ll be able to install it in your G5 easily yourself just by following the instructions in your user manual.

The issue you’re having is not a problem on a G5 with HDV material digitized to a separate media drive. Are you perhaps using a your system drive for capture and playback?

While reading your explanation, it also occured to me that you could also black and code a tape with DF TC and perform an Insert edit from your non-drop timeline.

That’s interesting Walter. How are you going to rectify that, just by cloning with new DF timecode? How much does it cost to clone a DVCPro HD tape?
