  • Drop / Non-Drop Frame Time Code

Posted by Max Frank on October 17, 2005 at 9:38 am

    1. What’s the practical difference (for an NTSC DV project)
    2. What setting should I be using for my feature-length documentary?

    Thanks,

    Wayne

    Wayne,

If you want to know the actual running time of the project, use Drop Frame Timecode.

Drop frame is generally used for broadcast, as it gives you the actual running time of the program.

Non-drop is often used in film post, though I am not exactly sure why.

Check with who you are delivering to for the specs of what they want. Usually, you are good with Drop Frame.

And NEITHER kind of TC makes any difference at all as to the running speed, quality, sync, or any other technical aspect of the edit.

It is merely a way of COUNTING and assigning “NAMES” to each frame.

As the others have said DROP-frame will give you an accurate “running time” (keeps track of how long the project is at any point).

The “default” TC of many DV camcorders is NON Drop-frame.
But you can use any combination of DF and NDF sources on EITHER kind of timeline.

So you can set the timeline for whichever TC your END USER would prefer.

Except with DVCPro HD. FCP will ONLY create a Non-Drop timelines using DVCPro HD presets.

Well, let’s hope our “end user” enjoys NDF TC 😉

Nope, it actually create a bit of a problem here since we need to master out to HDCAM Drop Frame. Not really sure why we can’t create a drop frame timeline, but we can’t.

That’s interesting Walter. How are you going to rectify that, just by cloning with new DF timecode? How much does it cost to clone a DVCPro HD tape?

The 1200A records DF so I just have to set up the timeline correctly to ensure that my Bars, Slate and Show all start at the correct timecode. took some tweaking and some tests, but nobody said it had to be easy.

    Walter,

While reading your explanation, it also occured to me that you could also black and code a tape with DF TC and perform an Insert edit from your non-drop timeline.
