  • Outputting HDV to Anamorphic SD Digibeta

Posted by Jonathan White on October 18, 2005 at 11:29 am

Hi I’ve just finished editing a HDV doc. for broadcast. I’m nearly at the point of mastering to SD digibeta.
I have a Decklink extreme which allows me to monitor downconverted sd in realtime.

How should I go to tape? Do I have to render in an uncompressed 10 bit timeline or is there anyway of recording decklinks downconversion ( I know I could just press record on the deck but I need accurate timecode, prog. start 10:00:00:00 etc.)

    Hope this question makes sense.

    Thanks,

    Johnny White

Extreme has RS-422 deck control for print to tape with timecode. And, with Digibeta you have a choice using the SDI inputs (audio and video), or analog component inputs (video only), which will require analog audio output from FCP.

How are you presently monitoring HDV from your FCP timeline? If you can see a SD output to monitor, that signal can most likely be routed to the Digibeta deck.

    Hi Jonathan,

Your DeckLink Extreme automatically down converts your HDV material to SD and outputs it in an uncompressed format to your SD monitor. Assuming you can see the down-converted standard definition video on the SD monitor, this is the same video that you can output to Digibeta.

You will also need to onnect the RS-422 cable from DeckLink Extreme to the deck so that you have deck control and timecode accuracy. As long as you are using one of the Blackmagic HDV easy setups, you should be able to control the deck via the RS-422 cable.

One thing to note is that when you attempt to record HDV material to a deck using Final Cut Pro 5.0.2, it will go through a lengthy “conforming” process before the video is recorded to tape. So do not be surprised if you have to wait before the video starts to record to tape even though you are able to monitor the playback of you HDV video in real time.

[Luke Maslen] “Assuming you can see the down-converted standard definition video on the SD monitor, this is the same video that you can output to Digibeta.”

Luke, does that mean that it will be only composit out to the DigiBeta OR can I assume that if I have composite out I will have SDI out too

something else, (since you’re there), and thank you to be there by the way)

I am in the process of acquiring either a Decklink Extreme or an HdLink, or maybe both… I wonder, would the HdLink allow me to capture HDV tapes in Fcp 5.0.2 directly in Dvc Hd Pro format ? I mean : in one reading and capture pass ?

    Bonjour Francois,

[Francois X] “Luke, does that mean that it will be only composit out to the DigiBeta OR can I assume that if I have composite out I will have SDI out too”

Sorry, my statement was ambiguous. I should have expressed it the same way you have, ie if you can see the composite (or component) output, you will also have SDI output.

[Francois X] “I wonder, would the HdLink allow me to capture HDV tapes”

HDLink does not capture anything. HDLink enables you to monitor SDI output using a low-cost LCD monitor.

My guess is that your question relates to one of the DeckLink HD range of cards? Using Final Cut Pro HD and any of the DeckLink HD series of cards, you can capture HD material via HD-SDI to the DVCPRO HD codec in one pass.

However if Final Cut Pro HD 5.0 is capturing your HDV material via FireWire, then it will be captured to your disk in the HDV format.

Perhaps I have misunderstood you so it would be helpful if you could explain the source of your HDV video, eg a particular camera or deck. I should then be able to provide you with a more accurate answer to your question.
