The normal technique in FCP (when using a full-frame 4×3 original) is to create a 16×9 anamorphic timeline, drop your sequence in, and scale up until you fill the frame. Using full frame 4×3, that nomally means sacling up 33%. Since you cheated, you may have to scale up slightly more to completely lose you phony letterbox on the top and bottom. The results are actually pretty stunning.

Double click on the video track in the timeline to load into the viewer, and in the filter tab you will see all ythe controls for the timecode filter, which will let you move and resize.
The academy leader is a standard countdown, counting down 8 to 3 and then with one frame of 2, at which point there is a single frame beep on the sound track, i.e. the “two pop.”
The two pop is 1 frame of the tone from the bars and tone that are on your system or widely downloadable anywhere.

You should check out Spy Kids 1. Almost every character in every frame of that film was rotoscoped, in that case because the sharpness control on the video camera (yes it was shot on video) was cranked up way too high. You will probably have to do the same if you really want to save your project.

What would you call one of the many 4×3 LCD TVs on the market that only display stand definition???

Unfortunately all TVs are not created equal. Some have this feature in easliy accessible places in the menu, others bury it in the factory level settings that have to be adddressed with secret codes. I’d contact the manufacturer.

Go into the menu on the LCD TV and see if you can turn “auto scaling” off. The TVs scaling engine is uprezing from 480i to 720i or 1080i and doing a lousy job. If you can turn it off you will probably see a dramatic improvement. Most, but not all TVs have a toggle allowing internal scaling to be switched off.

If they released the software after the release of the new Intel Macs then certainly that would be worthy of complaints, but they’re doing so in advance in this case. Give them an award…
