Well, most tape has been proven to have a shelf life of only ten years before the glue that bonds the oxide starts to deteriorate. Disc based media is supposed to last much longer, but no one really knows.

100 years from now, when you put that DVD in your DVD drive you will most likely find that neither you nor your DVD are in great condition.

Don’t know exactly how to do this in FCP, but in compositing apps, like Combustion etc. which I’m much more versed in, here’s what you’d do.
Duplicate your video layer on another track. Create a soft edge mask on the top layer around the stuff you don’t like, and invert so that everything else is visible except the stuff you don’t want. Then, move the BG layer around until the parts of that layer that you like show through. Bing, you’re done. I haven’t done much with masks in FCP, so I’m not sure exactly how the filters work, but I’m sure there must be a rectangular mask that’s pretty simple to work with.

What video format are you editing?
Is your media on separate drives other than your system drive?
What type of media drives do you have and in what configuration?DRW

That can easliy be achieved with keyframing uisng the Time Remap feature in the Motion tab, but of course you’ll have to learn how the keyframer works if you don’t know that already.

The voiceover tool is specifically for capturing to the timeline. Capture, the same thing you use to capture video into browser, is how you record VO too.
