No, don’t go immediately to small claims court. First step is to write a nice demand note to the former client that will put you in the driver’s seat. Be nice, be contrite, give him one week to pay. Show the judge just how reasonable you are, that you are willing to give the client his work product, that your intention is not to hold him up. Let him be the dick. He will hang himself if you let him. Judges love this… Now, as soon as you mail that letter, by registered mail of course, go file in small claims court.
BTW, be certain to bring witnesses to court — even your mother and your best friend will do. And, bring lots of evidence. Receipts, your camera, computer logs — anything you can pile on will show the judge that you are a professional. Judges don’t even look at this stuff, but they do note it, and they always rule in favor of the guy that supports his case with something other than his mouth.

Install on the new machine and plugin your serial number — it should work right away. If you have any problems just call their tech support people, they are extremely nice and very helpful. When upgrading recently I had a problem and they were terrific.

From what you’ve stated so far it seems that you have no gripe with the client. If the client pays you everything you’re owed to this point at the time you hand over the goods, then it seems to me you should deliver. If he’s trying to get away without paying you for your time, then that’s another matter entirely.

It took me over twenty years in the biz to learn this important lesson. I probably gave away half my billable hours over my first two decades in business.
And, as I’ve stated here before, I also collect every Friday at quitting time. While some of my clients must work on a 30-day net basis, most will pay at week’s end if I ask. The Friday afternoon collection takes a lot of the emotions out of the equation, and never lets a debt get out of hand.

Unless you’re a fortune teller there’s no way you can accurately estimate how long editing will take on any given project. An estimate is nothing more than an educated guess at best, and its a sure way to financial ruin. The only way to get paid what you truly deserve is to charge for finite periods of time, by the hour, day, or week.

Maxtor continues to operate as a separate entity from Seagate for the time being, and their Maxline series of SATA drives continue to receive the highest performance ratings. Seagate will most likely learn what they can from Maxtor’s R&D and then phase them out over time as Maxtor did a few years back when it acquired Quantum.

This is pure rubbish and it is not supported by empirical data. So, as a generality it is not true, and therefore it is just an opinion.

Too low for what?
Firewire only allows capture of digital video as it exists on tape. DV tape captured via firewire will yield DV quality video, no more, no less. If you desire to capture to another format such as 8-bit uncompressed, you must have a capture card like Blackmagic or Kona. You can always capture DV via firewire and convert using the codec of your choice, but that can be pretty time-consuming.
