This is pretty stupid but…
Posted by Chris Poisson on June 20, 2006 at 1:37 amAfter almost 5 years the stupid little latch on the door of my DSR-11 broke off one if it’s little nubs that serve as part of the hinge on the door. So, I now have a perfectly good DSR-11 with no door that will hang on to it.
I did a Google search to find a new door to no avail. Seems like a perfectly stupid simple request, you’d think that Sony would have thought to make the freakin’ door at least as robust as the rest of the machine, but doesn’t seem so. Anyone know where to get a new door? (I can’t believe I’m using this forum for this, oy!)
Have a wonderful day.

June 20, 2006 at 1:42 amMan, I feel your pain.
Mine broke off, too.
I repaired it using a toothpick!
I just cut the very tip of the toothpick off, and superglued it to the door. Then, you insert the toothpick end to the DSR-11 first, and then the end that is still intact second. Click!
The wood of the toothpick can “squish” a little so it doesn’t have to be a perfect fit!
Well, at least it worked for me…
Good luck!

June 20, 2006 at 3:26 amI think if you take a poll… 75% of the owners of this fine box will tell you their doors are broken…. Mine? Well — sorry – it’s still there… as of today.

June 20, 2006 at 3:27 amIt doesn’t seem that Sony sells the door only. You would have to buy the complete “DOOR ASSY, FRONT” for $57.72. The part number is X39512842 at https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/sony-parts.aspx
However, repairing would seem cheaper.

June 20, 2006 at 3:30 amChris,
We’ve got six of them in the building…. all six have lost their doors!
Consider the “doorless” version like a convertible with it’s top down… much easier to get in and out of!

June 20, 2006 at 3:56 amToothpick is OK, but I prefer a bit more substance.
Straighten out a heavy paper clip (not the little ones… use one of the 2-inchers).
Cut its end on an angle with wire cutters so you have a sharp point.
Hold the clip with pliers and heat up its point with a lighter flame.
Then quickly “stab” the sharp end into the edge of the door where the “nib” WAS (not too far).
Let it cool and become “stuck” in the plastic of the door.
Cut off excess clip, leaving just enough to become a “new” metal “nib”.
Remount the door.

June 20, 2006 at 4:57 amWe use one for lafcpug meetings and have for about 5 yeras. Door broke off after 6 months. We left it off. I think a DSR-11 with the door on it is a collectors item

June 20, 2006 at 3:23 pmSending the unit would most likely be much more expensive.
Last I checked Sony Depot repair rates were $120-130/hr (usually four hr minimum billing) plus it takes forever (over two months) for gear to be repaired.

June 20, 2006 at 5:40 pmGeezus, it shouldn’t be “Matte,” it should be “MacGyver.” Fixing a DSR-11 with a paper clip and a lighter, just too brilliant. Worked like a charm on my end too. Wow.
Thanks!
Have a wonderful day.
