Well as cheap as storage has become, I tend to use the DV codec as my offline.
Over 70 hours will fit on 1TB. -
The Canon XL lenses only fit Canon cameras.

Since Canon is discontinuing the XL2, prices on the body have dropped but the lenses are still priced normally since they fit the new HDV camera.
If you don’t like the newer 20x auto lens, then you might have a look at the 16x manual lens.
If you want a more professional grade lens, you will more than likely need to purchase a professional grade camera than the xl2. -
Check ebay to see what others have gotten.

Besides the upside down image and couple of f/stops of light loss?

I use a microfiber cloth to clean my lenses, and then always use a UV filter on the lens to protect the front element.
