Make sure you stick with one sample rate. DV audio is generally 48kHz, but CD quality is 44.1kHz. You have probably exported from soundtrack at 48kHz and put that into a 44.1kHz timeline. Go back and make sure your project and sequence settings in FCP and Soundtrack are all at the same sample rate. Hopefully that is where you’ve gone wrong.

750GB of DVCPROHD is only something like 16 hours worth of footage… If you use the 150 minute preset in compressor it should fit onto 7 or 8 DVD’s. It will take a while to encode on your G5, but it shouldn’t be too bad.

Thanks Chris, but both those seem to be for PC only. Do you know if they have Mac ones anywhere?

June 25, 2009 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Dubbing an XDCAM

In what way did it mess up the order of your clips? I just did some duplications from XDCAM to XDCAM with the PDW-U1 using the “copy .MXF files to HDD method”. After copying back into the clip folder on the formatted disc, the xml and proxy files regenerated. XDCAM Transfer then read the disc exactly the same as the old one. Did I miss something?
Even if the clips are out of order, can’t you just sort them by name? After all, they are just files on a disc and not shots on a linear tape.

Yes, check the anamorphic option. Leave pixel aspect ratio as NTSC, not square. You may have to set these first, then put your text on the timeline.

May 20, 2009 at 9:45 am in reply to: Advice to limit rendering time?

I would go with John’s advice. Prores is much better than DV-PAL and its upper field first, so that will match the HD footage. Just use the normal Prores setting, HQ is not necessary 99% of the time.
If your system can’t play back HD in real time, then you might save time in the long run by using compressor to transcode the XDCAM material to SD Prores, or using the Media Manager tool in FCP to Recompress your material.

May 20, 2009 at 9:38 am in reply to: Audio Levels on Multiple Clips

Another thing you can do is select the clips on the timeline you wish to modify, then hit Apple+Option+L which brings up the audio levels dialog box (Also under Modify>Audio Levels…). You can then enter a number to change the levels, either absolutely (setting the level to the specified dB) or relatively (changing the level by the specified dB). It will make more sense if you try it a couple of times.

  • One other thought – your 75 minute DV file will be over 16 Gb. An FAT-32 file system on a Windows machine will not handle files greater than 4 Gb. Or it could be some similar error.

This is a classic case of moving from “web video” to real video. As far as I can see it you have 2 problems here.

First, HD video is not “anamorphic” so you should not check the anamorphic box in your sequence setup inside final cut. SD video can be 16:9 or 4:3 but HD is always 16:9.

Second, to solve the viewer problem in DVDSP, simply open the Inspector when your track is selected. In the “General” tab, change the “Display Mode” to 16:9 Letterbox. That should be all you need to do.
