  • Need help with work flow P2 to FCP to DVD

Hi! I am set up with an HVX200 working on P2 cards @ 720x24pn and running FCP 5. Now i’m pretty new to video, but have knocked out a couple of projects (for web) and everything has been fine so far. Files download for camera fine, edit fine and have exported to QT great. No worries!

Now, I have just been asked to put a couple of recent projects onto a DVD. I happily fired up DVDSP and dropped in my files. The problem is that my lovely 16:9 projects are getting squished to 4:3.

I am pretty new, and very confused… I understand that this is probably due to the Anamorphic 16:9 not being checked in the video set up before starting editing (or capturing the files??). I tried changing the setting (it made a copy) and then export again, but same problem. I the tried starting from scratch with a new project with the 16:9 anamorphic checked and got a extra wide viewer. Way too wide for my footage (not sure what the ratio is).

Basically I need help getting the files fixed to play on a DVD at 16:9. Then get my settings correct for future projects so I don’t have this hassle again. Thanks in advance!!

    Hi Jame,
Are you trying to do a SD DVD from a 720 movie?
I don’t think DVDSTP can manage the downscalling.
You need downsize in FC or Compressor.

This is a classic case of moving from “web video” to real video. As far as I can see it you have 2 problems here.

First, HD video is not “anamorphic” so you should not check the anamorphic box in your sequence setup inside final cut. SD video can be 16:9 or 4:3 but HD is always 16:9.

Second, to solve the viewer problem in DVDSP, simply open the Inspector when your track is selected. In the “General” tab, change the “Display Mode” to 16:9 Letterbox. That should be all you need to do.

Thanks I got it!!! sheesh! so simple!

Through my messing around I have noticed that I have some loss of quality perhaps. This is apparent in the simulator. Stuff just look very pixelated. I swear that I had it looking better and a decent quality (in the simulator).

What is the best work flow to produce the best quality DVD? From past experience I know that DVD’s generally look bad on a monitor due to resolution. But how can I get them looking there best? I have checked the 2 pass VBR in preferences. Is there anything else I can do?

    Thanks!!
