FCP2 will not run in Classic and I don’t think the new Macs will boot into OS9.

You will need an older Mac or you will need to update FCP, expensive.
Cheaper to buy the old Macintosh. You can find old G3s for chump change all over the planet.
Upside is you get a second Mac.

MPEG2 is no longer an export option in FCP5, you must use Compressor.
iDVD uses the exact same compression engine that Compressor and DVDSP use.

Thom, you might be confusing burning a DVD with burning a file onto DVD-ROM, different issues and operations.

DVDSP is an authoring application so, yes, it’s really complicated. Just look at the size of that manual! If you look up burn, format and build in the index, you’ll find a clear explanation of each and which one to choose. However, why they call the operations burn/build/format is beyond me. I’d call format burn and build format.

Of course. See the list of overlays in the drop down at the top of the Canvas. However, they only appear for a single frame unless you create a duration for them.

See the section on timeline markers in the help system. Very confusing and this one of the more poorly conceived parts of the interface since the term “mark” is used so many different ways.

August 18, 2005 at 2:29 pm in reply to: compressor can’t connect to background process

This is an on-going and frustrating issue. No solution in sight, it’s different for everyone. The error started to show up with network issues. If Apple didn’t suggest it, shut down, disconnect all networks including USB and FW and ethernet, and see if you can start a Batch. Since you can IP over FW, FW is seen as a network connection and Compressor looks for all possible clients.

August 17, 2005 at 7:43 pm in reply to: slow FCP render of Motion graphic

It’s sort of rendering twice, once as the clip and then as the composite of layers inside FCP.
But, yes, every effect or behavior you add to anything in Motion dramatically increases the render time. There are some things you can do to streamline that but they are self-imposed limitations in your design or workflow strategies we’ve all been using in other apps for many years.

August 16, 2005 at 2:44 pm in reply to: Flicker/speckles in moving graphic

This is almost always an indication of a bad file. The corruption could be in the original or it might be being introduced anywhere along the rendering path; in the read, the the processing or the write. If the specks are in the exact same place each time you view the effect, it’s happening upstream of the write. If they move, it’s in the read.

Impossible to diagnose from here, it’s a binary search, though. Try setting your render scratch to a different drive. Try replacing the original file with a fresh copy. Try moving the original file to another drive.

  • > The rendering is also extremely slower than usual. Any suggestions as to get it to run better with Magic Bullet software? < You mean slower than Magic Bullet used to render or just lower than you think it should be running? MB processes every single pixel, it's a major CPU hog even on a dual CPU Mac. Unfortunately, you really need to talk to the MB people, it's their issue first, FCP's issue second. I think there's a MB forum here on the cow. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

August 15, 2005 at 4:25 pm in reply to: How do you get .SGI files into Final Cut Express

Go back to the originating application and render out in a more commonly recognized codec. QT recognizes about 200 different formats.
Where on earth did you get an .sgi?

Happens. Try tossing the FCP prefs (although I have never this) and try restarting the computer with nothing plugged into either USB or FW. Sometimes the FW bus just can’t be seen by all apps. Voodoo.

Eric, I think many of us would have suggested reflectmedia but for the budget. Cool tool, worth it if you do lots of keying.
Of course you can link to your own stuff! Please do.
