  • Burning a DVD with FCP 5

Well, it’s time to burn a project to DVD and it’s not going according to Hoyle. I’ve tried FCP File>Export>Using Quicktime Conversion. Once I’m there MPEG2 is to be selected from the ‘Format’ dropdown. MPEG2 cannot be found “anywhere”???

So I went at it another way. From FCP I exported as a QuickTime Movie and imported into DVD Studio Pro. Following the instructions I have a project(in this case a 30 second project) has to be Built & Formatted. It took several minutes for the Build…is this normal? and after the Formatting DVD Studio “froze”…But, it wasn’t really a “freeze”. When I ejected the CD a prompt said it was successful? The project was burned to the DVD but for the life of me I can’t understand what happened.

There has to be an easier route to burning a DVD. Is there? It seems that at every turn FCP has you traveling through several different options in order to complete a project. It has been a interesting journey so far. Thanks. Thom Sullivan/Comcast

    Yeah, it’s called Compressor.

First, When you’re exporting out of FCP, MPEG2 should be an option. I’m not sure why you’re not seeing it.

Regardless, you can export out a regular QT file and bring into DVD StudioPro and it will compress it into an MPEG2 file (while you’re working int he program or on the build depending on your preferences). Make sure your StudioPro Preferences are set to a compression rate that you like. And this is why it probably seems like it took a little longer to build-because it had to compress the QT file you exported before it could build.

Now you can build and format… but I seem to have less issues with a dvd if I build the files and then take those files and burn in Toast…
You may want to try that…

As for jumping through hoops…I think what you feel now is too many options to complete a project, will soon turn into happiness to have so many options once you get the hang of things.
    Good luck!

for small quick projects such as yours, I use iDVD. It gets the jobs done and very easily.

[Wayne Carey] “for small quick projects such as yours, I use iDVD. It gets the jobs done and very easily.”

    I second that.

All you need to do is, in FCP, choose:

    File > Export > Quicktime Movie… > Current Settings > Audio & Video > Markers (if any) > Save.

Do NOT check the “make self-contained” (no need if you’re burning with iDVD.)

After the export, drop that file onto an open iDVD menu.

Customize the menu(s) if you want.

    Burn the DVD.

    That’s about it.

MPEG2 is no longer an export option in FCP5, you must use Compressor.
iDVD uses the exact same compression engine that Compressor and DVDSP use.

Thom, you might be confusing burning a DVD with burning a file onto DVD-ROM, different issues and operations.

DVDSP is an authoring application so, yes, it’s really complicated. Just look at the size of that manual! If you look up burn, format and build in the index, you’ll find a clear explanation of each and which one to choose. However, why they call the operations burn/build/format is beyond me. I’d call format burn and build format.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
