There are many ways to get sound files into FCP with timecode.
Why does your sound guy have any input into what your editor is doing or using?

Depends on the filters you use and the codec you use out of AE.
It’s more complicated that you might think and you haven’t provided enough information.
But, if you use the correct settings, such as using a lossless codec, no, you will experience no loss of quality while the processing is being done inside AE.

If you don’t have a copy in your AutoSave Vault, you may completely screwed.
You can try to open the project from within FCP instead of double-clicking on it.
Search this forum for the out of memory term, we see it often. But corrupt project files are more often trashed beyond repair.

You have a chance now to re-examine or to create your worst case scenario planning.

March 22, 2006 at 4:51 pm in reply to: Media manager or – what am doing wrong ?

Yar, I posted the exact same issue to the FCP forum over on apple.com a few days ago. The answers I received were the same ones we’ve been getting for years:
    a. Media Manger totally sucks.
    b. It’s probably never going to get fixed.
    c. Copy your sequence.
    d. Create a new, empty project, paste in your sequence, open the sequence.
    e. Select all and drag into the Browser. This is supposed to create a long list of clips that are in your sequence. I find this doesn’t always work.
    f. Make all of the clips INDEPENDENT.
    etc.
    etc.
    etc.
    x. Now you should be able to run MM on the sequence and get a copy that only contains the precsie media in the sequence.
    y. The chances of success are only 50-50.
    z. Post back again to rant and scream about Media Manager. We feel your pain, we understand. There’s nothing we can do. Media Manager is one of the things about FCP that points directly at Apple’s blatant decision to go after features instead of utility in FCP.

March 20, 2006 at 4:48 pm in reply to: Time Lapse Stutter in FCP 5.0.4

You will need to define jerky, smooth and stutter. Also, where are you seeing this problem? The Viewer is just a QT player window and will run anything QT can handle. The Canvas, however, is a window into your sequence and wil only display the sequence settings to the extent your machine is capable.

Timelapse, by its very nature has some glitches.

March 15, 2006 at 3:43 am in reply to: Reconnect Again

    > prompts you to reconnect one file at a time. Not good if you have hundreds of files in dozens of folders. It seems so obvious that FCP should first assume them to be in the same location.
< When I need to to reconnect from a remounted drive, FCP5 doesn't seem to have any trouble locating everything that's in the same logical location. There are usually several missed files that need to be manually reconnected and a bunch of renders get dropped but the feature generally works quite well for us. Is it just the number of folders you have must search that is stumping FCP? bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

March 14, 2006 at 3:13 pm in reply to: Where is AVI export in Compressor?

Before you invest too much time messing with this, try to get the precise specifications from your client for the file they are expecting from you. AVI is ancient and permeates the PC world only because the operators of the computers are too terrified to update to modern players. There were hundreds of codecs for AVI and only a scant handful were ever available for Macintosh. None of them are current AFAIK.
You may need to move this project to PC. Unlikely, but it depends on their perceived need for what they think AVI will accomplish.

March 13, 2006 at 3:23 pm in reply to: what codec do I use for CD video?

I’ve just run into this with a total bonehead project. You must, simply MUST, ascertain your protocols before starting this project or getting along too far. There are dozens of routes you can take, dozens of possible encoding products, many ways to create your final product. You must determine your lowest common denominator for machine specs, bit rates, file allocation budget, user interface and directory design and how many different playback formats you will support.

Strongly urge you acqure several video CDs or enhanced audio CD/DVD products from other bands. Deconstruct their presentations. There are also hundreds of musician blogs where folks have posted their “how we made our video CD” workflows.

Luck, and please come back and tell us how you made out.

    Second that.
MPEG2 is not universally playable. You rclient either knows exactly what they want or they have no clue. I’m voting for NO CLUE.
Demand your client provide you with precise specifications for every parameter of the file they think they want. Open the MPEG2 settings options in Compressor or QT Conversion or Cleaner and consider at the tens of thousands of possible combinations you can get wrong.

March 5, 2006 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Anybody here used/set-up Apple QMaster yet?

[Arniepix] “FCP does not support that kind of external render. Maybe in a future release, but not now. “

Was that in the original inquiry? I didn’t look that carefully, but, yes or no, FCP does not do multiple machine rendering.

Qmaster remains on the list of stupidly obtuse, inexplicably non-Apple and non-Macintosh software provided for no reason since it does nothing.
