    Hey and Hello…
I’m being played by this media manager. I have a 12 gigs video file (1hr long)which from it I edited a 25mn sequence, I want to dump all the unused media so I’ll have a 3 gigs media file instead.
I choose the sequence, get to the media manager and select
    1. copy.
2.delete unused media from duplicate items.
    3. duplicate selected items and place in a new project.

which gives me a new project folder with the sequence and THE EXACT same media file ?!?!?!

p.s. on the green bars of the original and modified projects I also get the same sizes and the length for both.

    any help will be appreciated.
    Thanksim
    zinim.

    The media manager is broken..

I’ve been having the same problems. Unless you’re wokring on a very simple project, the media manager is practically sueless. I have had tro dump all my audio and reimport it as a single track – because if I don’t the media manager makes me digitize all of the video from the audio sources i used, even if the video doesn;t exist on the timeline.

It’s ridiculous. Apple should really do something about it but I think it works in some situations so…

Good luck with your project. Try doing what I did with the audio and it might help. I dunno.

Yar, I posted the exact same issue to the FCP forum over on apple.com a few days ago. The answers I received were the same ones we’ve been getting for years:
    a. Media Manger totally sucks.
    b. It’s probably never going to get fixed.
    c. Copy your sequence.
    d. Create a new, empty project, paste in your sequence, open the sequence.
    e. Select all and drag into the Browser. This is supposed to create a long list of clips that are in your sequence. I find this doesn’t always work.
    f. Make all of the clips INDEPENDENT.
    etc.
    etc.
    etc.
    x. Now you should be able to run MM on the sequence and get a copy that only contains the precsie media in the sequence.
    y. The chances of success are only 50-50.
    z. Post back again to rant and scream about Media Manager. We feel your pain, we understand. There’s nothing we can do. Media Manager is one of the things about FCP that points directly at Apple’s blatant decision to go after features instead of utility in FCP.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I too agree that MM is the soft, weak underbelly of FCP – and that it has very many problems – and that getting it to work right is like spinning plates on broom sticks…

But that being said… I regularly uprez 60 minute shows from offline DV to uncompressed 8bit, without having to capture unused media. And, I am sure that I’m not talented enough to be special here.

The key may be that I create a new online project rather than try to trim media within the original offline project.

    I dont know??… Check this out…
