  • Drop Larry a note for clarification. He will probably answer. I was confused by that, too, and attributed it to a typo or a missing paragraph or two.

Try reading the entire article again. I think there is a reference to why the apparent contradictory advice is there.

But, 2-pass is a tremendous waste of time unless you absolutely need the benefits. The Motion thing is computationally intense, too , and lengthens any batch activity dramatically. You sort of decide what you wan and what you can tolerate: Better quality=two to three times as long for the batch. Acceptable quality=faster run. You must also consider the overall nature of your footage. Do you NEED the best motion estimation?

Anyway, please let us know if you hear form Larry.

    > One of the greatest things to come to FCP is Multiclip, Love it and edit sequences of more than 2 1/2 hours. Give it some time you’ll figure it out.< Agreed, Mutliclip is way cool. What I find frustrating is the amount of memorization required which, of course, once you get good at it, isn't really that big a deal. I wish the interface had been more direct and less button-intensive but I'm still learning it. The number of switches and viewing enablers you must set is kinda silly and I wish I oculd just point and click at the clip I wanted active and maybe option-click for audio-follow-video and control-click for audio-only. Umm, like I say, my experience is a bit limited with it, all of these features may be readily available or even better than I imagine. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    > I’ve coded some 10 p25 videos from DVCPRO HD material, and they come out pretty stuttery.< What application are you playing them with? H.264 is a delivery codec, they say, so it doesn't work well inside FCP but it should look nice out of QT Player. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Sequence 1, call it Box Generator.
Drop in your clip, scale it to, say, 60%.
Create a matte behind it, this will be the edge of your box, the border.
Nest this comp or just bring it into your main sequence.
Apply scale to make it the size you want (don’t go over 100% or you’ll need to go back upstream to the Box Generator and rescale your original clip to be larger).
Sue the Crop controls to change the size of the border and Edge Feather to control the softness of the edge.

There are lots of ways to do this.

We have also seen these .av files when capturing to improperly formatted drives, FAT32 or Winderz instead of MacOS10 Extended.

June 26, 2006 at 6:53 pm in reply to: Paste Attributes Problem – end key frame

    > It actually copies and pastes the keyframe that is 1 second BEFORE the clip. That keyframe is not DURING the clip and it copies fine. It’s the keyframe AFTER the clip that doesn’t copy. Strange. < FCP may not be seeing media after the Out Point if you have set the length to 7 seconds. visible media before the in point is puzzling, yes. But, if your clip is nine seconds long, both of those keyframes should appear where you expect. If I was doing this, having motion beginning before the dissolves start, I'd be doing as Matte suggested: Using longer clips and trimming the content. I do slide shows often and I tend to use separate video tracks, overlapping the clips and setting transparency fades manually. bogiesan

June 26, 2006 at 2:33 pm in reply to: Carving name in ice

Depends on what you need it to look like. I’d use Shatter to create the spraying ice particles and Particle Systems to create a secondary, directional shower or particles.
There’s no reason to buy Zax and spend a few months learning how to use it if you don’t need it. But if you need to create a sculpture that looks like ice, hire a 3D animation artist. You need to know how to light 3D extrusions and work with refraction indexes. You’re also looking at some interesting render times.

Sorry, I couldn’t tell you without knowing the parameters of the AVI file, pixel size, color space. codec, etc.

DV is a standardized format. AVI and QT are just architectures or wrappers for a huge variety of file types.
