  • Why is my FCP creating weird av files!!!!

    Hi

When I digitize Final Cut 5 is creating these weird av files that don’t work.

Lets say I have a 30 minute long tape when I digitize I should have a single media file clip in my drive. (thats if there are no timecode breaks) However I end up with let say 12 files all with some sort of extension of ‘av’. So I would have

    707-av
    707-av1
    707-av2 and so on

One of these files will play however if I delete any of the accompaniying av files it would not open anylonger.

This is very frustrating. I did read a thread about this before but no one knows the cause or the fix.

Could it be corrupted Quick Time preferences if it is how do I remove these preferences.

Any advice is much appreciate it.

    Please Help me 🙁

Sounds like you have timecode breaks in your original clip so FCP is creating a new clip at each break point.

We have also seen these .av files when capturing to improperly formatted drives, FAT32 or Winderz instead of MacOS10 Extended.

Or if your scratch disk pref is set to be limited to 2GB.

I’ve had this crop up before, but only when I tried to do a Capture Now and not a Log then Capture. I’ve found a slightly less annoying work around…. by logging a tap in 2 halves, making sure there is some over lap so I don’t loose any footage. This almost always gets the job done when I don’t have specific logging info to go by, and it’s just the whole tape I need. Hope this helps!
