Did you ever shoot at off speeds such as 60 fps.

The beauty of the varicam is the ability to under and overcrank shots.

If you did shoot offspeed ask post if they used the FRC either in FCP or external unit to deal with offspeed footage.

I defiantly did. As an owner of a Varicam H model I get to play with it a lot.
In this case they slowed down shots that were never intended to be manipulated.

What version of FCP did they edit with? FCP 5.x does much better slow-mo than previous versions. If they’re working with an earlier version, they can either update or look into using a plugin like Twixtor or Retimer.

[Guy Jackson] “In this case they slowed down shots that were never intended to be manipulated.”

So they’re taking 24fps material and just making slow motion clips? These are NOT clips which were shot at 60 and then captured at 24 to slow them down? That does make it a bit trickier to pull a good slo mo off that footage.

Best way to achieve a smooth slo mo is to use Boris FX optical flow which is in the continuum complete package. Or in FCP, ensure that they apply a bit of Motion Blur to the clips the clips in the Motion tab. Probably 25% with full Steps should clean up the jitter. Optical Flow will be a bit sharper though.

Very true and if they’re in Version 5.0 or higher, they really need to turn on “Best” Video Processing in the timeline. Default is “Normal.”

    Hi

An even better and not so expensive solution is to make your slomo in Shake, (right click – export to shake)

True, it’s even cheaper than the Boris Continuum Complete package now.

Thank you all for the replies,
Just another question: we are doing a film out eventually, so is this something that would rather be done during that process?
Does anyone here have tried this before?
Playing the shots at the 24 frames they were captured at and doing the slow motion during the film out?
    What would that look like?

    Rene
the simplest solution with the varicam is to just hoot it that way, the the files can be dealt with in in manner of possibilities, with out sacrificing quality
