The problem isn’t the application. Nor is it the Mac. It’s the DV part. Proprietary cards like Kona and such ($$$) add tons of realtime functionality but, yeah, it’s a bummer.
I have never used either of those other nle machines but our old Media required hardware codec support to do realtime keying and alpha compositing. Are your other machines using a proprietary codec?
The drawbacks of using a non-proprietary, format agnostic platform like FCP are diminished by the cool stuff it can do but it takes time to make yourself happy with the decision to go FCP if you purchased without knowing what you were getting. You eventually learn to live with the necessity to render by learning how to use Quickview and lower rez RT.

Error messages on the Macintosh are rarely helpful or indicative of the actual problem. I’ve never encountered an out of memory erro in FCP so I can’t help much but I’d say you probably have at least one bad piece of media associated with that project.

These things are almost impossible to diagnose by remote control. It’s rather up to you to begin a carefully orchestrated binary search to determine if your problem lies with FCP (doesn’t sound like it), your System and if any other apps behave the same way (could be) or your drives (could be).
I am only speculating but this sounds like a System issue. When you ran Disk Utilities did you start from your OS10 install disk and run Repair or just do permissions from your hard drive’s utilities?

If you can rent the movie, try to deconstruct what you’re seeing stepping through it frame-by-frame. I think you will see that there is a fake 3D scene somewhere in between, something that gives the illusion of z-space being traversed as the camera moves into the screen surface. Some of the buildings and foreground elements appear to be in front of the screen glass.
This is truly advanced effects design. You will need After Effects since FCP does not offer any 3D elements and, frankly, faking it in FCP would be frustrating beyond reason.

I have not read the entire thread but chromakeying or even doing a simple luma key is making this much more complicated than it needs to be.
If I recall correctly, that was accomplished by using a spotlight from behind a white translucent screen. Hitchcock walked into the beam of light and it cast a shadow onto the translucent screen where the charicature outline (Jules Fiefer?) had been drawn.
It could be done also with front lighting but you need a lighting instrument with a lens in it, something like a Leko.

Your colleague is mistaken.
However, you should commit to extensive testing. Better than that, hire it done by a captioning service. You are going to find out there are lots of weird little things that can go wrong when attempting to run closed captioning.

Please ask any questions.< If you're not getting typing/keyboard errors in nay other application DO NOT reinstall the operating system, waste of time. FCP includes several other applications. Forget trying to import it or transcode it.
Ask them to print the material out to DV tape for you.
