  • Error, Out of Memory message in FCP

I’m editing 4 short projects in FCP at the same time. Right now, I’m just setting them up and organzing them, so the project files are quite small. 3 of the projects are working flawlessly, but in one of them, I keep getting an “error, out of memeory” message whenever I try to open clips in the viewer. I can drop clips into the timeline and they’ll play in the canvas, but they won’t open in the viewer at all. I just get error, out of memory.

All projects are running off the same drive. all were shot and captured in the same format. I’ve tried restaring the computer, drive, FCP, only opening the project in question and shutting down every other applciation. I know my computer’s memory is not running low, and I know the drive the clips are on is not the problem since the other projects are all working just fine.

    Any advice?

    Thank you so much!

Also, I’m running OS 10.4.7 on a dual core intel mac pro with 4 GB of memory, processor speed 2.66 GHz,
    FCP is 5.1.2
FCP my memory is set to 100% (2560MB)…

Error messages on the Macintosh are rarely helpful or indicative of the actual problem. I’ve never encountered an out of memory erro in FCP so I can’t help much but I’d say you probably have at least one bad piece of media associated with that project.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

bizarre. working with cmyk still images can often cause out of memory errors, also some 3rd party filters have been known to throw these errors … haven’t heard it happen with raw video files in the viewer only though. wait and see if someone else can shed some light.

    bogiesan,

how can you address a problem by first stating that you’ve never seen it, and then give an answer? That doesn’t make sense… by the way, corrupt media doesn’t have to be the solution, this can happen with or without bad media— it is a much more wide spread problem
