You have to create a mask of the area that is covered in the gold foil and then figure out what effect to use. Shine would not be where I’d start since this is just a color, not an active effect, unless, of course, you’re going to animate the light source. That would require an easier-to-draw mask.

Your sample image is complicated with lighting from only one side and there is much variation in the surface texture of the skin. All this can be created in AE but, like most simulations, it will never really look like illumination from a scriptorium.

    > An option to switch playhead behavior between End Jump and Stationary may be a nice feature, but its current functionality is not a stupid feature in the least.< I still find this annoying. Turning it off would be great but we've been screaming about it since at least v2. Apprently, no one at Apple thinks it's worth changing. Stupid? That's a relative value. This particular quirk is annoying but it's not on my list of stupid features in FCP. And my list is REALLY long. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    > but it can’t be that hard to create a shell.< That's like saying, "Muzzle flash, single frame highlights form the flash, smoke and some super slomo. Hey, they're all available within After Effects. How hard can it be?" bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    > My comp is going to be projected onto a huge 6 foot globe, so it needs to be larger the 1460 x 1460.< This implies you are using a projection system that understands the task. Hope so. Lots of projectors require full frame video that has been cropped so be sure you test his before committing. Pre-rendering and rendering: If you have preocmps or nested sequences (or layers) that are golden, they will NOT change, you can pre-render them and import the movies. Now the movie simply plays into the timeline without any additional processing for applied filters because everything is baked into the movie. When you use this technique are strictly project-based decisions. Sometimes it makes no sense. Example: You've got a greenscreen shot that requires lots of hand-drawn masking and a couple of obscure filters applied to four copies of the shot. You would pre-render the key with alpha to avid all processing. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Yes, the question is superbly vague. Yes, graduation and color boosting can be done elegantly and simply in After Effects or just as easily directly inside Media 100’s effect system.

“Speed it up” is unlikely. Most of the wonks will have you reinitializing the drives, reinstalling the OS and all applications.
This apparently has unpredictably wonderful benefits in a lab situation where the act of resetting the systems back to zero is worth the time and effort in avoiding unknowable future problems.

Holding the mouse down will auto-open the upper optical drive. Suggest you have a logon or startup app or script that is holding down the mouse button. I do not know Protools but if you have a control surface for it, there’s likely a fader or pot that is programmed to be a mouse button.

Could also be an Entourage setting?

What have you got now? Art for the shell? A movie of the gun? Muzzle flash? What’s the point of view? Behind the shooter? Camera looking down the gun exit?

    > I need to embend metadata directly in fcp for exported QT files which retain metadata info used for encoding purposes.< Do you mean the title and stuff like that or do you mean the encoding settings? You can generate XMP sidecar files in most media handling applications like Adobe Bridge but AFAIK, Apple hasn't seen fit to bless us with modern metadata handlers in the FCP. Same reason we can't see the embedded data on DV tapes that most cameras record, date/time/ camera settings and such. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

  • Don’t forget the jog wheels.
I’ve been working for so long with a single-button mouse, Apple’s Mighty Mouse was a gift from heaven.

Online ergonomic information abounds. It’s easy to adjust your workstation for your body configuration, just takes a little research. You may need a keyboard tray or a new chair.
