At our shop, the Photoshop people all want LaCie monitors. One twit insists he deserves an Eizo. But why stop here? You can get a Xgen 19″ for $180 at Macmall or a Samsung 22″ for $250, HP 19″ for $260.

What’s the price difference between the Dells and Apple? Macmall doesn’t do Dell.
The Apple 23″ is only $900. The 30″ is only $1,900.

But you have to talk oranges and oranges, Dell has a couple of different 20-inchers for $200 to $500. Which ones are you discussing? The Apple 20″ is $600.

You cannot think of burning DVDs of capturing to hard drives as “archiving.”
Your tapes are what, 10-125 years old, but you’ve still got the deck. Your DVDs will be unplayable in five to ten years. Your hard drives will crash. Your Mac will be replacedwith anew drive architecture (can you even remember SCSI?).

If you want to preserve them, dub your tapes to DVCAM or to VHS.

True, just remember to make it clear to your clients this type of subtitling is burned into the video. It is not user-switchable.

You can’t really. Setting you portable’s screen to emulate NTSC or PAL is dangerously unpredictable. If you cannot hook up a proper editing monitor, just work as best you can till you can move to a more professional rig.

You CANNOT edit video in a video colour space on a MacBook. You must have a video monitor.

You can download or create your colour bars in many ways. I’d start with the installation DVD for your FCP. There is a large folder of countdowns and bars. Then google would be next.

Drag the layer where?
If you move it in the layer section of the timeline, all attached information moves with it.
If you are trying to drag it in the timeline, you must select all of the keyframes in order to change their time values.

Adobe’s out of the box render network has never worked for most of us. “What’s wrong” would be easier to describe if it had ever worked. I think most of us just stopped bothering. I haven’t even looked at render engines for AE since v3.5.
