Is Bluray dying? What will Apple Do?
Posted by Richard Martz on August 21, 2007 at 11:42 amParamount and Dreamworks Drop Blu-ray
August 20, 2007Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animation announced this morning that they will henceforth support the new generation HD DVD format exclusively on a worldwide basis. These are the first two major studios to drop support of the competing Blu-ray format. Until now, most of their HD discs were being released in both HD DVD and Blu-ray, including the Mission: Impossible collection, The Untouchables, Tomb Raider, U2 Rattle and Hum, and others.
This announcement represents a significant shift in momentum in favor of HD DVD, as Paramount and Dreamworks join Universal Studios in declaring exclusive support of HD DVD.

August 21, 2007 at 12:06 pmWell Sony lost the Betamax war over high licensing costs. I wonder if the same thing is happening with BluRay.
As I recall, Magnavox gave away the VHS technology / licensing so it was a no brainer for companies to line up behind VHS even though the picture quality was vastly inferior to Beta.

August 21, 2007 at 12:08 pmAlso, the funny thing about Apple and BluRay is that they don’t support the format at all on their machines right now. We had to purchase Adobe Encore (very long story, doesn’t work right, lots of problems, but that’s another post) and a third party blu ray burner just to make it work on the Mac.
Compressor has supported HD DVD since last year and has since added Blu Ray support, but there’s no way to author or burn the discs using Apple software / hardware.

Sony lost the beta wars do not wanting/ willing to support the the porn industry, the same decision that seems to be haunting the BluRay camp.
With out the widespread support of most popular content delivered to the home user
Blu ray will have the same issues in the future. The Adult industry brought us the VHS and DVD formats and since the Blu Ray commission will not allow adult content to taint their product line, many people have voiced this opinion.

August 21, 2007 at 1:14 pmPersonally I always have thought that HD DVD would win out simply because of the name. It is easier to for the lay consumer to grasp the concept of HD DCD just by its name, I have many times even heard the average Joe refer to a BlueRay disk as an HD DVD simply because it has HD video on it and it looks like a DVD.

Ah but with firmware updates, anyone can create a BluRay disc that plays on those machines. We’re able to play our own discs now on our Sony machine.
So I guess if the adult industry really wanted to produce discs for BluRay, they could.

I must say that I have to applaud the BluRay Commission for their efforts, but, it is a shot in the foot if you want to get a format off of the ground. History does show that the adult industry does make or break a format.
As for the format wars in general, myself and my co-workers all seem to feel the same way. If you want to get a format off of the ground in today’s society – why isn’t HD-DVD and BluRay burners more readily available?
I know they are just coming out BUT this isn’t completely new technology. Its been around for a while. XDCAM is now about three years old. That is the first implementation of BluRay. HD-DVD has been in Apple’s software for more than a year. This is why people are so reluctant, I think.

LG has a dual player out there that I’ve seen in all the electronics stores. They’ve also announced a new one which will be a single tray that plays everything. BluRay, HD, regular DVD.

Sounds good….
But, our issue is that fact that burners are just now coming out and finding players isn’t an easy thing in the Memphis area. Take a look on the net… There’s not much choice out there that is somewhat reasonably priced.

By the way, isn’t that just a myth or urban legend? The whole porn industry and Beta’s failure? The industry wasn’t selling nearly as many products as it does today.
From what I understand, the internet is really responsible for the explosion of the adult VHS/DVD sales which came long after Betamax died.

August 21, 2007 at 3:11 pmThe stupid thing that gets me is that Blu-ray and HD-DVD use basically the same encodes, I believe the Planet Earth discs use the same encode whatever version you watch… If that’s the case then what’s the point?
