  • Suggestions for a new monitor…do I have to buy Apple??

Posted by Micah Ginn on August 21, 2007 at 2:40 am

I’m looking to expand my workspace, and really want at least a 24″ monitor…but I don’t know if I should invest in the Apple Cinema display or the much cheaper HD displays available out there in the world (Samsung, Gateway, Dell, Acer, etc.).

    Anyone have a suggestion?

    Thanks in advance!

Dell monitors are great. I have an older 2407 and I love it and was much cheaper than the Apple displays at the time. If I had to buy a new monitor today, I’d go Dell. A lot of people would say the same on here. I’d probably spring for a 30″ if I were to start fresh.

I just didn’t know if I would sacrifice greatly if i purchased something other than a mac monitor.

    thanks!

I am not sure about the others you mentioned, but the Dell monitors are really good in my experience and offer a few more bells and whistles than the Apple equivalents.

I went from an apple display to a HP and I have no complaints.

We have about 20 Dell LCDs from 21″ to 24″ in my facility and they’ve all worked out well. Can’t recommend them enough. It’s a good way to save a buck without lacking quality. Use the saved money to help buy a very high quality video monitor where it’s needed most!

    Another vote for Dell here.
I plan to get a second this year t match my current 24″ dell.

Mac’s look nice and are good quality but dell match it if not come very close.

No contest in my opinion. For us video guys we are colour checking off a video monitor anyway. (Or should be) so precision is not AS critical as photographers or print designers needs.

Plus the all extra inputs including card readers is awesome!

At our shop, the Photoshop people all want LaCie monitors. One twit insists he deserves an Eizo. But why stop here? You can get a Xgen 19″ for $180 at Macmall or a Samsung 22″ for $250, HP 19″ for $260.

What’s the price difference between the Dells and Apple? Macmall doesn’t do Dell.
The Apple 23″ is only $900. The 30″ is only $1,900.

But you have to talk oranges and oranges, Dell has a couple of different 20-inchers for $200 to $500. Which ones are you discussing? The Apple 20″ is $600.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

i was specifically talking about the widescreen dells that are similar/comparable to Apple’s, like the 2407 or 3007.

The Dell’s also have component video inputs if that interests you at all.

I’d have to agree with JeremyG and feel it’s a comparable comparison. The 20″ Dells we have are all at least 1600×1200 resolution, nothing lower. And yeah, our 2407 24″ has component inputs which has come in very handy. So much so that I now wouldn’t buy an LCD without them.

Dell coupon codes are easy to also get which is impossible with anything from Apple. Every single Dell monitor we have has been bought with coupon codes. We’ve paid around $300 for the 20″ on the discounted side and about $450 for the 24″ on the discounted side.
