opening final cut pro without opening last project
Posted by Pierre on August 21, 2007 at 3:28 pmis it possible to open FCP without opening last project?
For instance if I want to create a new project without having to go through all of the windows telling me the hard drive from the previous project is offline?
Sorry, i know this is simple.Shane Ross replied 8 years, 1 month ago 12 Members · 12 Replies -

August 21, 2007 at 3:43 pmMichael- Close the project while your still working in FCP. Then quit out of FCP. The next time FCP will open with a new project.

August 21, 2007 at 3:51 pmIn User Preferences theres a setting in the General section called “Open last project on application launch”. Deselect that.

August 21, 2007 at 4:18 pmIn addition to the aforementioned methods…
The way I accomplish this to create a project called (are you ready?) “New Project”.
I set up all the windows, presets, and bin headings the way I prefer.
I have a “clean” Timeline with :30 of Bars & Tone, a generic slate (even a version with an animated countdown).
I save the project in this “ready” condition and LOCK the file in the Mac’s “Get Info” window.
This keeps this “master copy” from being accidentally modified. Then, when I want to begin a new project I go to my FCP Documents Folder and double-click this “New Project” and, after FCP opens, I immediately “Save As” the REAL name of my project.
When you do this, you’ll automatically have both your original “New Project” locked file and the Newly-named unlocked (ready to edit) version. -

August 21, 2007 at 5:20 pmI use what Rob said too. There are just too many little things I end up doing at the sart of EVERY project such as making bins for music and graphics. Having a template means I never have to do that again.
But, I have one more suggestion. Once you have the template made, drag a copy onto the Dock. Files can live over in the section next to the trash can (but not with the other apps).
This gives me a way to start my Final Cut template right on the dock.

August 21, 2007 at 6:44 pmYou know, we’ve been screaming about this since v1. Even Media 100 had a simple way to open a fresh, empty project: Option-launch the app.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

August 21, 2007 at 7:52 pmFCP has a “simple way to open a fresh, empty project” too. As I said in my last post, deselect the “open last project” option in user preferences. When you open FCP next time, it’s a fresh, empty project. The other suggestions for templates would be a nice built-in FCP touch- do we have to do it ourselves??? 🙂

August 21, 2007 at 9:31 pmIf you forget, you can just hit cancel on the opening project and then select New.
No need to wait for it to open.

August 22, 2007 at 1:40 pmOne of the original complaints was FCP complaining about the drive for the project being offline.
There’s no way around that since the scratch disk is tied to the app and not the project. Along with closing your project before quitting, you could set your scratch drive to something you know will be there like a built in media drive or (gasp) your system drive. You’re going to change it again for the next project, right?
Why not whip up a little applescript that launches FCP by opening your new template project file and then pops open a dialog box which reminds you to set you scratch disk. We all forget to reset our scratch location from time to time. It’s usually pretty benign, but can clutter up your drives.
Just a thought.

August 23, 2007 at 1:05 pmIs there a way to open FCP w/o opening any project whatsoever? That’s what I’d like. I’m switching often between so many different projects (and sometimes formats), it’s just annoying to have to deal w/the old projects popping up when you open them.
And setting the preferences not to open your last saved project just means it opens a new project, which in my case, I have to get rid of, along with an couple of annoying messages about deleting an unsaved project – or if I forget to delete it immediately, autosave popups warning that it can’t save an unnamed project. (Seems like it used to auto delete that new project if you opened a new one right away, but maybe I’ve just imagined that?)
So, how ’bout it? Any way to open FCP with no project open at all?
Thanks
