AE is not a universal format conversion application. The list of acceptable media files for AE is found in the documentation.
Highly compressed formats must be decoded somehow and it’s far easier and more efficient to do your transcoding upstream of After Effects.bogiesan

sorry not to offer a direct answer but over on adobe.com in the support forum for AE, there have been a few threads on the same topic. I even started one (a sudden text jagged issue showed up in CS3 for me) but I have not been able to get back to it. My issue seems to be caused by certain effects applied to text layers. If I use the Text Effect on a standard solid, the text remains clear. This was a weird change, inexplicable. I’ve been doing text for a long time in CS3.

Pretty basic stuff guys.The OP mentions making a “radical edit” and my advice at that point would be to save the project with an incremental name and continue work on the new version.

Canon’s codecs are weird.
Is it in synch or is it just visually undetectable? If it’s actually in sync, there is an absolutely repeatable point at which it will drift; the audio codec’s slightly different sampling rate will drop a frame or two relative to the video codec.How far out of sync? The sampling rates in the original footage differ by an easily determined ratio. Just take a 00:10:00:00 clip and place the total length in frames of the video track under the total length in frames of the audio track.
Divide.
A few frames or a few seconds?
If the difference is small, say, 10 frames over 10 minutes, the slight change in pitch by modifying the speed of the audio track is not detectable. This step tremendously simplifies your whole operation.bogiesan

Check the LIGHT STREAK tutorials, too. Most such employ a time effect that will add decay to multiple instances of the stroke pulled from past frames.

Any layer can be turned into 3D by turning on the switch.

You debug these things by assuming user error since we all know cutting and pasting from AI to AE works well and generally flawlessly.
Try a new AI document with one or two simple paths like circles and lines.
