Here’s the challenge I’ve got: I have a Write-on effect targeted by a Tracking path. No problem. Two things I’m trying to do with it:

I want to have the stroke created by the write on fade out progressively from its tail. I can adjust the stroke time, and the opacity, but I don’t know how to manipulate the part of the stroke that isn’t current – or how to manipulate the stroke so that it isn’t entirely uniform.

Also, I’d like to be able to access the position information for parts of the stroke also not current, so the ‘tail’ of the stroke can have added movement…

    Any ideas?

You could try duplicating the text layer without the stroke effect. Then adding the stroke effect to the top layer. Then animating a mask to reveal the stroke.

Check the LIGHT STREAK tutorials, too. Most such employ a time effect that will add decay to multiple instances of the stroke pulled from past frames.

Very helpful, thanks. Especially good idea to look at the Light Streaks tutes. I had convined myself what I wanted was the Write On effect, but in fact a particle emitter with zero velocity was a much more flexible tool.
