I might suggest restarting your computer, it’s annoying but sometimes this helps. Also, are you just selecting the layer and pasting or are you creating a mask first and pasting into the Mask Shape property? Or the position property?

…If you want to use multiple processors/cores then you need to either upgrade to CS3 or buy GridIron Nucleo. If you did either of those things then more RAM wouldn’t hurt either.

July 20, 2007 at 6:11 am in reply to: AE CS3 Lights burned out?

I’ve run into some rather strange problems when importing older AEPs into CS3, I am tempted to mark it up to a random incompatibility quirk but just in case I should ask if you have any 2D layers in the comp, what the settings are on the light, etc. =)

[Mark S. Copley] “Also are there any good tutorials or reading on the differences between CMYK and RGB and how to deal with converting?”

I’m enjoying Real World Photoshop CS2 by Bruce Fraser and David Blatner, it covers this stuff in pretty good detail. And they’re true to the ‘Real World’ title, they don’t prance around too much with technicalities, they tell you what works better for what and why.

[craigcow7] “They won’t work because they are not compatible with Universal (Intel).”

You either need to get the newer Universal Binary version (many of these are available as free upgrades) or launch CS3 in Rosetta on your Macbook Pro. The latter is, for reasons that should be obvious, not ideal at all.

Try turning Live Update on, it’s the button on the far left above the timeline.

July 19, 2007 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Trapcode Shine vs. CC Light Rays

In addition, Light Rays is limited to a fairly simple operation on the layer it is applied to. It basically puckers the layer to an extreme and then composites this over the original layer.

Shine, alternatively, allows you to define your own colors (or use the layer’s) and creates the ‘rays’ based on a threshold that you can define. It is much, much more flexible.

July 19, 2007 at 7:06 pm in reply to: film flicker

[kuaishou] “the footage seems to flicker in intensity”

My first recommendation would be to do as Dave suggested and find out what the shooting conditions were.

Second thing I’d do is look at all of the color channels individually (opt-1 through opt-3, alt-1 through alt-3 on PC). If there is flickering in one of the RGB color channels and not the others then it was likely a serious equipment problem.

Any solution in post will not be nearly as elegant as re-shooting the footage, and it will likely be much harder.

July 19, 2007 at 6:58 pm in reply to: exporting images for NTSC

[Judy Ranelli] “I import into my video app at 720×540.”

The resolution of NTSC DV is 720×480 (D1 is 720×486).

If you’re using 720×540 PNGs then you want to make sure that they do not use pixel aspect ratio correction in Photoshop.

When you bring your Square Pixel 720×540 image into an NLE you will then need to fit it to the Sequence/Composition/Timeline’s NTSC resolution, in effect squashing your 720×540 image down to 720×480 and giving it the proper pixel aspect ratio to be correctly interpreted on a standard NTSC device.

Most programs have a function to fit footage to the correct resolution.

July 19, 2007 at 5:49 pm in reply to: Uncompressed AVI

[RoRK] “And the 100 DPI requirement sounds contentious as video specs are irrelevant to DPI measurement.

    And working at 4064×32 pixels”

With the ‘DPI’ included I initially assumed that the 4064×32 ‘frame size’ was listed in inches =O

32 pixels seems short and a little low res… although 3200 pixels seems far too high… I would ask for clarification on this.
