  • Pasting Illustrator Paths in AE

I am unsuccessfully trying to paste an Illustrator path into After Effects. I checked my Illustrator clipboard settings and they are set correctly. It worked okay once but now when I try to paste the path onto my solid in AE, the last effect that I copied in AE pastes onto the layer instead. This is extremely, extremely frustrating and if you have any advice for me please let me know!

Did you check AICB preference in Illustrator?

I might suggest restarting your computer, it’s annoying but sometimes this helps. Also, are you just selecting the layer and pasting or are you creating a mask first and pasting into the Mask Shape property? Or the position property?

What are you trying to use the Illustrator path for? Are you wanting to use it as a motion path? If so, you need to select the “Position” property and THEN paste the Illustrator path. You’ll end up with position keyframes that match the shape of the pasted path. Just pasting a path onto a layer will not work… unless…

Are you wanting to bring in an Illustrator path as a mask? Simply selecting a solid and then pasting an Illustrator path should result in a new Mask being applied to your solid using the Illustrator path as the shape of the Mask.

Not sure why your path doesn’t seem to be on your clipboard.

I’m creating a solid layer in AE then pasting the path from Illustrator into that solid layer. Should I create a mask in the layer? I thought about it and tried it but it didn’t work. Maybe I didn’t do it right.

I run into this sometimes. Try directly selecting the path in Illustrator with the white arrow tool.
