You could always save the RAM preview (Composition -> Save RAM Preview…) if you need to play it while in another application.

I run into this now and again, and usually end up converting the footage to ProRes. Interestingly, it doesn’t happen with all XDCAM footage; typically just with footage shot on a Sony FS100. I’ve googled it numerous times and tried dozens of solutions with no luck. Now I just find it more time efficient to convert the footage instead of wasting more time digging for a solution that may not exist. If anyone has the magic fix, I would be happy to hear it.

You could also split the layer immediately before and after where you want the mask so your masked layer is its own very short layer. Command+Shift+D (or its PC equivalent) will split it at the spot of the playhead.

To alter the size of the comp window, just right-click on it in the Project window and go to Composition Settings. Change to your desired size from there.

The audio will only play during a RAM Preview. You don’t have the “Mute Audio” box selected in your Preview panel, do you? You can also hold the “Command” key and scrub through the timeline to hear audio.

If you want a decent looking HD file that is 35 minutes long, unfortunately the size and export time will be relatively high.
You’ll want to export to H.264 and probably have a minimum bit rate of 3 Mbps in order for the quality to be acceptable. You’ll likely get a little pixelation in motion or dissolves with this, but that’s the trade-off for a smaller file. Your processor and RAM will limit how fast it exports, but as Joey said, there are numerous other factors that will affect the speed. A lot of effects in your timeline can make it a guaranteed over-nighter.

Glad you found a good solution. 🙂 Just food for thought, but you could also try duplicating the bottom layer and using it as a track matte for your fill layer. Make your fill layer extra thick so it fills everything in the matte.

In my experience, After Effects is far better. I haven’t done it in Premiere in a while, but from what I know, it just duplicates and blends frames. AE can actually perform some interpolation. If you want it to look really slick, look into the Twixtor plugin.
