You might want to have a read around Inverse Kinematics. Dan Ebberts has a good piece here, which would be a good start.
If you want to go a bit deeper, then Google “inverse kinematics” “after effects” and there’s a script to help you out.
That should lead you in the right direction anyways.

Turning the viewing mode dropdown to “Final Output” not working for you?

Check out Mocha for After Effects and mochaShape. When you select a point it shows you the previous, current and next keyframes for that point in a zoom window. It makes it trickier to get lost in roto.

There’s a Help button included on the top of every Boris plug-in control. Click on this and it will open up the appropriate help file for you in Acrobat Reader. The Boris guys generally write really good documentation.

I’ve got an Express key set up for a radial menu, so I can add new nulls, solids, adjustment layers etc. with a quick tap. I use that more than I thought I would when I set it up. As I do with another express key I’ve got set to Undo! :o)
One of the touch ring settings skips up and down layers, and in another big change from you, I’ve got the upper button still mapped to a double-click. Other than that, I think we’ve got a pretty similar set-up.
I love the Intuos4 more than I possibly could have imagined.

What format are you exporting to from After Effects? What format is your FCP timeline? First take a look here.
A quick search for “quicktime gamma shift” here at the COW will give you quite a lot of threads about this.

I’ve always had good experiences with MPEG Streamclip. The fact that it says one of the files is unrecognisable and copying the VIDEO_TS folder to your harddrive fails, suggests that there’s a problem with your original disc. Can you see any scratches or visible dirt on it?
If you have access to an external DVD drive, that may be able to read the disc more successfully.

If you mean a certain section of the video then:
If you mean a certain area of the video, then duplicate you source layer, mask the area you want to speed up and apply Time Stretch to the duplicated footage.

Any footage you want to use in V8.23 will have to be transcoded to the Media 100i codec. So whether that happens at capture in realtime, or when you import (at speeds a great deal less than realtime) is immaterial.
Rule of thumb is if Quicktime player will play it, Media 100i will read it, but everything must be in the Media 100i codec if you want to use it.
I don’t see any reason why you could export to it afterwards though.
