humm.. time to shell out some clams on some new disks then eh!

did you recently upgrade to the latest quicktime?? not sure if it affects 5.01,, but a few of our machines started acting real funky all of a sudden,, all at the same time.. as it turns out someone ran Software Update and upgraded the Quicktime on them,,,, not to slick when they’re running ver 4.5.. Tonnes of performance issues and hang-ups.

the latest Quicktime doesn’t play nice with 4.5. perhaps not with 5.01?

I often take a nNovia Harddrive out in the field. great little box,, can pass the tape off to whoever,, and start playing with the media right away… not to mention the time savings not having to capture from tape!

Only issue with it is when the clips are imported into FCP the audio is stereo linked with ch1 panned left and ch2 panned right. Was annoying at first,, until I set to memory a few key strokes and short-cuts

1. Option-L – turns stereo link on/off of selected audio clip(s)
2. copy/paste attribute – center pan a clip, copy it (apple-c), highlight all the others you want to centre pan and right/ctrl click – paste attributes Pan

3. if it is a clip I am going to reference parts of at different times, I drag or double click clip in the bin to load it into the viewer, select the audio tab in the viewer, and center pan it there. This way every time I edit a piece of that clip into a sequence it will already be centre panned.

I’ll have to play with that one a bit!! I build stylized open tease sequences for hockey, football, and soccer broadcasts and use a tonne of fast-mo and slo-mo. Typically,, for ease and efficiency I do straight razor cuts and speed change the snippets.

In the next couple weeks I need to build a bunch of thematic packs,, I’ll probably give all the new studio2 features a good run!

And I, very frustrating. Can’t imagine why they axe that functionality in the timeline, when the arrows aren’t doing anything else?!?

Perhaps one of a few subtle ways of trying to get people away from timeline editing, as I find I open it less and less as I become more comfortable with a visual workflow!? But that still doesn’t make it any less frustrating

how terrible?? SD DVD’s look great on my HD set,, mind you,, my player up-converts SD to HD, but regular broadcast TV looks good as well.

does you friend have a good quality HD set? HD sets handle HD relatively the same way,, but some are far better than others at dealing with SD signals.

I would imagine your friend’s set isn’t great at working with SD. For good measure,, i’d try your DVD on another HD screen to make sure it isnt some other issue. A good SD DVD should still look clean on the average HD TV.

I carry my 17″ with me every day, usually with a lacie extreme. With the right laptop bag it’s not that bad to lug around. I love it. I have access to 6 g5 towers with 23″ cinematic displays at the office. I use my macbook over the towers most every day.

With a client monitor, the 17″ inch display is just right, I work fine with it, but wouldn’t want to go any smaller. I do at times plug into a 23″ display, if I had a 15″ display I most certainly would have to do this far more often.

If you are going to do much editing on your macbook, You will definitely appreciate every extra inch of real estate the 17″ has over the 15″

You could set up custom window size settings and add them to the bar just above the timeline for easy access (where the snap and link buttons live)

Resize the windows how you want them, then go window -> arrange -> Save Window Layout, save and name, then right click on the bar just to the left of the snap and link buttons, select “show button list”, drop down the “window Menu” list and select the custom window set-up you have just made and voila, you have one click buttons that will resize all the windows to your pre-set.

I have a bunch of different configurations set up in my quick-bar for various purposes,, just dont forget to also add the “standard” so you can quickly get back to normal window set-up once you are done with the custom set-up

“ctrl U” works even faster to resize all windows back to normal as-well

“Shift U” and “alt U” will also open up custom arrangement 1 and custom arrangement 2 respectively.

I imagine you could export an EDL from 5 and import into 4 (never used FCP 4, will it import an XLM from ver.5?)

If you cant open the xml file in 4, you could always log the EDL and re-capture. time consuming,, but accurate and faster than starting from scratch.
