Amanda,
Apple sells an “academic” version of FCP. Its neither cheap nor free, but it is substancially less expensive than their retail version. The only free versions of the software are pirated, illegal copies, and no one on the Creative Cow promotes or assists in the use of pirated software.

June 17, 2007 at 4:50 amhi david,
thanks for your reply. i understand – i wasn’t looking for an illegal upgrade, and i appreciate the tip about the academic version. so there is absolutely no way to transfer fcp 5 files to an fcp 4 program, huh?

June 17, 2007 at 6:31 amNope. Like a lot of apps, FCP project files are not backward compatible.

June 17, 2007 at 6:39 amI imagine you could export an EDL from 5 and import into 4 (never used FCP 4, will it import an XLM from ver.5?)
If you cant open the xml file in 4, you could always log the EDL and re-capture. time consuming,, but accurate and faster than starting from scratch.
