We have one here that does the exact same thing. The power supply went flakey. Like yours, happens when tape transport locks in. Power just cuts out.

You’ll have to convert the EPS files to either a tiff, targa, jpeg, or other FCP compatible format. I use photoshop. You’ll also need to define the pixel perimeter, photoshop should ask you to define this when you open. Use either the full frame dimension of your project (eg: 720×48(6) for SD-NTSC with non-square pixel,) or 2X, 3X, so on.., if you plan on doing any pan/scan/zoom of the images.

Here’s another trick,
If the person isn’t horribly soft, Duplicate the video and stack on top of each other, then on the top layer(V2) throw either a feathered oval mask or garbage matte around the subject. Next, throw a gaussian blur or soft focus blur filter on the background layer (V1) and make it subtly softer than the top layer. This will make your subject “sharper” than the BG and bring them out a little better.
*disclaimer* Results may vary depending on footage, operator, and tool available.

you can sharpen the video somewhat with filters,, but it will never look great and will really bring out the ‘video uglies.’
If you can, do a picture in picture, or side by side,, shrinking the image will make it appear a bit sharper.
Other than that, find a new camera op and re-shoot.

I’ve experienced a couple system-wide lock ups recently aswell, when working with, and exporting, a multi-layer project from motion on my 3.2 octo mac… (I’ve got about 20 layers and text in this one)

Try using the “Grab” utility. It’s a great little program that ships with OSX, so you should have it in your utilities folder in your application list.
It captures screens, windows, and user designated selections in the .tiff format.
There are many other free-ware, shareware, and pay programs that do this aswell, and will allow capture to other formats,, but I use Grab all the time and i’ve had great results with it.Then, assuming you have either FCS or FCS2, animate the web page ‘grab’ in motion. It does a far better job of zooming in and out of images than Final Cut.

[Joe Colombatto] “Seems the CGM plug-ins are reading fine, but the Virtix are not. “
The Virtix filters could be AE native filters no longer supported in FCP 5+ since FCP changed its effects architecture.
