I know I should have posted this on the Motion forum but there’s not a lot of activity there and I really would like a quick answer if possible.

If you’ve got a 14″MBP with the Geforce 8600 graphics card and have a few minutes to spare I wonder if you would conduct a little experiment for me.

Using Motion 3.0.2 (project=1080i50) create a simple two layer graphic with a couple of large (4kx4k -ish) pngs, the upper one with an alpha channel. Add a bit of basic keyframed motion to each layer to get em moving with resect to each other and then scrub the timeline.

Doing this on my machine completely locks up the system. Nothing but a reboot sorts it out.

I’m running the latest FCS2 with all the updates (including the recent ProKit one that I hoped might sort this out) OSX10.4.11, QT7.3.0 and everything’s been sweet until this first HD motion project.

I’ve 4GB ram and have swapped the cards over to eliminate them and can’t think what else this could be.

    Thank you

Just did this set up, and I’ve only got 2GB of RAM in my MBP. It works fine, can even play, scrub, start and stop, no issues. And I’ve got Safari, Mail, iTunes (with X-Men movie paused) Motion and System Profiler all running. I had SysProf open because I didn’t know if I had the same graphics card, but I do.

The only difference between our systems is QuickTime (other than RAM, but that’s not used for Motion, so it’s immaterial).

Update your QuickTime to 7.4.1 and you should be ok. Motion, after the last pro update, doesn’t play well with anything less, really.

    Hope this helps!

    kev~!

I’ve experienced a couple system-wide lock ups recently aswell, when working with, and exporting, a multi-layer project from motion on my 3.2 octo mac… (I’ve got about 20 layers and text in this one)

thanks for the response guys. I’ve a feeling that it’s a vram issue ?hardware/driver, as occasionally motion will do a ram preview with a couple of black frames.

I’ve been a bit reluctant to load QT7.4, because of reported issues on the Cow, so will clone the system Monday and try it on the clone.

May also try Leopard that way – but that’s for the future.
