[walter biscardi] “Yep, we’ve had that on all our Kona systems since V 2.0 of the Kona drivers came out. Can’t seem to track down where that comes from.”
okay, I’m not the only one still having this issue. I was afraid it was just me…

Over the years, I have owned 6 LaCie drives & one CDR/DVDR burner.
4 of these drives were the the blue faced firewire ones. One died about two years ago. I could never tell whether it was the enclosure or the drive. It was 80 GB and not really worth trying to save at the time. The other 3 drives simply have completed projects on them and still function fine.
My biggest problem drive has been my 500 GB Big Disk. It’s power supply (I think) has always been a bit problematic. It powers on and off while using it. I traveled around last fall doing the “Honda Civic Live” tour and thought each weekend that I set up that it would be last time it would power on…
It’s out of warranty and I don’t use it any more. I was never fond of the proprietary power supply cable with the D2 enclosures. It never seemed to fit well and I could never tell what was enough / too much force when plugging it in.
I have switched completely to SATA drives for the road and I have had no issues with the Kano Enclosures that I have been using.

For starters, you should try pulling out the RAM you may have added and see if the machine crashes with the RAM it came with.
I just bought a PowerBook 1.67 at the beginning of the month.
I bought two Viking 1 GB chips that I added.. My machine crashed whenever going to sleep or using FCP.
I tried everything from reformatting, to various utilities, etc. Nothing seemed to solve the issue.
I returned the RAM & swaped it for two EDGE RAM chips.
I haven’t crashed once since swapping…
Maybe it was the brand. Maybe a bad batch…

that’s funny, I was trying to research this for Joe. I didn’t realize he had started a thread.

[Walter Biscardi] “Clay Walker actually owns a current FireStore product and one thing he told me was that the drive was so noisy they had to stop using it on an independent film project. So both of us are curious as to how noisy the drive unit is going to be and whether or not it will be a problem on some shoots.”
Yes, this is true.
I have the FS-4 and I have been using it since March or so.
The fan in it is very loud. I would compare it to the early Powerbooks that sounded like a hairdryer…
I use it mostly for corporate candids work so it isn’t that big a problem.
I tried to use it for our “48 Hour” film project and it was impossible to use it because of the noise.
They need to make a blimp or barney for it…
I would not buy this new unit without testing it out (if you are going to be recording audio when using it.)

Well, I’m going to go out on a limb here:
I think that AJA has joined forces with The Kona Bicycle Company & The Kona Coffee and Tea Company
https://www.konaworld.com/index.cfm & https://www.konacoffeeandtea.com/
I think they are going to deliver a NLE that has 27 gears and comes in 3 sizes – Tall, Grande & Big…
(Not to worry, it will support iPod Video material…)

but will these new G5’s be able to handle the taxing playback requirements of iPod videos?
🙂

Don’t get me wrong, I think the video iPod is a great idea. I think we will be developing video for HD and cel phones at the same time now…
I just wish someone would track down Job’s quote from about a year ago when the photo iPod was released of him emphatically stating that that the iPod would never be a video playback device…
I think my permanent residence is the baggage claim at the airport now. It seems to be where I am most of the time. I have been back & forth from LA over the last few weeks. I had two films screening in the Westwood Int’l Film Festival and I was on the set of Zemeckis’ “Beowulf” last week at Culver Studios. I am doing an onsite video for Honda this weekend at Dodger Stadium… busy time.
But yes Ramona, I would like to meet up with you. I was thinking you were in Northern Cal?…

I participated in a seminar at USC last week on delivering video on portable devices. It was very interesting.

I have recently begun having some video reviews in the field on my plain old everyday Motorola 551 cel phone.
I can compress the video to a .3gp format, transfer it via bluetooth from my Apple laptop to the phone, track down my client & have a review. If I remember correctly, the photo iPod & this phone have the same screen resolution.
It’s advantage over the video iPod, is that it has a built in speaker & I actually own it…

You can try using this FCP plug in:

I have used it in the past for converting to PAL.
