CNBC: New iMac and Video iPod
Posted by Ron Thompson on October 12, 2005 at 5:44 pmSounds exciting…although the stock is down.
I have yet to buy an iPod…now that it supports video, it should be interesting, from a video pro standpoint. Might be neat to screen video on an iPod…or integrate it some how in a production workflow. The iMac is reportedly an entertainment hub based unit with remote control.

Well, it does connect to a TV or even a projector via S-Video from the new dock. I wonder what the video quality will actually be.

October 12, 2005 at 11:41 pmI’ve seen radio stations premiere songs from iPods that record execs and artist bring in to radio interviews.
Like Steve Jobs said, this is an untapped market… unlike the Walkman, I think WE will decide how a video iPod will be used.
I can definitely see this as an on-location tool for clients who need to see video clips. Reference clips, demo reels in your pocket, sample clips…at 60GB you can definitely transport clips to and from locations (I think some people do this now). Finally, I can tell my wife to get me one for Xmas.

According to the iPod Video specs on video quantity:
Video capacity is based on 4 minutes per H.264 750-Kbps video combined with 128-Kbps audio.

According to the tech specs, the videos are 320×240 frame size so assuming that is scaled up for playback on a TV, that ain’t going to look very good anyplace but on the iPod.
For MPEG-4 it’s 480×480 frame size.
