I just got a 1.67 powerbook with 2 gigs of memory. We are using FCP 5 and I am using a lacie FW800 PCMIA card with a BigDisk D2 and a AJA IO/LA connected to the internal FW400 port. I crash constently. And when ever I digitize, render or even just play video for more than 3 minutes my computer gets very hot and a loud buzzing fan turns on. (room was very cold)

When the system crashes it will either freeze completely or start “chuggin” and communication with the IO/LA stops working.

I have been crashing when FCP is open or closed. I have crahsed even when the IO/LA is not connected or the drive is not connected.

Has anyone heard of any defects this machine may have. This is my second powerbook, I would hate to return it too.

Also all 3rd party components are working perfectly when attached to my G5.

If I were you I’d get myself over to an Apple store:

    https://www.apple.com/retail/

If you have the time you could try wiping the drive and re-instaling everything…that MIGHT work. But honestly, with such a new system there’s a good chance it’s a hardware problem. Best to get it looked at right away and let them replace anything that’s out of order.

Did you buy it from Apple? Even without Applecare you’ll be fine this early in the game.

download and run FCP Rescue. That solve most of my crashing issues:

I highly suggest using Shane’s advice in the future, but I really have my doubts about any software fix for this current problem. The fact that you get the same symptoms whether you’re using Final Cut or not is really not a good sign.

Do keep in mind that I’m not suggesting you simply RETURN it. You should sign up for a spot at the counter at the Apple store and simply let them look at it. In 20 minutes they can go through more tests than we could suggest here all day. I know it sounds like a drastic step but it really could be worth your time.

Once you find a store near you on the web site, click on it and find the “Make a Reservation” button. Sign up before you leave home!

For starters, you should try pulling out the RAM you may have added and see if the machine crashes with the RAM it came with.

I just bought a PowerBook 1.67 at the beginning of the month.

I bought two Viking 1 GB chips that I added.. My machine crashed whenever going to sleep or using FCP.

I tried everything from reformatting, to various utilities, etc. Nothing seemed to solve the issue.

I returned the RAM & swaped it for two EDGE RAM chips.

    I haven’t crashed once since swapping…

Maybe it was the brand. Maybe a bad batch…
