Well this is interesting news! I have an Asus P4 G800 E Deluxe here on one machine, similar board, and have used it for over two years with the onboard 1394 and it has never dropped one frame in that entire time. So I wouldn’t go making sweeping statements about certain things being s**t when there are quite a few people using the onboard Asus firewire connector without problems. That may be the problem in your case but you do a disservice to forum users by making broad sweeping statement based on your experience only. I would suggest by all means make suggestions but I think you are off target stating that the TI chip is the only one that works when that statement is patently untrue.

If you know someone with Particle Illusion get them to create an effect loop such as you require and record it out to tape, or file. There are a number of PI ’emitter’ libraries available that have many different types of ‘snow’. From light gentle snow falls to large gently falling slow flakes to blizzards even. If you want it stylized PI can even create the flakes with their crystaline structures. All very pretty and easy to plonk down over a black background, with quality to boot. I don’t know of any specific equipment that will do this with VHS, some of the broadcast formats yes. Depending on how bad these ‘glitches’ are I would suggest trying to get hold of a good TBC (timebase corrector) with a full frame DOC (drop out compensator), or a ‘pro’ S-VHS deck with internal TBC. Run you VHS tapes through the TBC or out of the pro deck and digitize. If the errors aren’t massive you may be able sort the problem out this way and produce avi files that are suitable for use.

The majority of it, the stuff that we shot, was on DVC Pro 25 and some Pro 50, on Panasonic AJD-910’s with a bit of Sony Z1 here and there behind the scenes. Ten never asked what we were cutting on. They were happy with the quality so that’s all that mattered
All the multi-cam was switched via component on Sony BVS-3200CP and the rest was either component or SDI to firewire into Vegas and back out the same way to the master. The main thing is that they liked it and it passed the tech spec check first time. This being the first major program using multi-sourced material from a variety of sources, DVD, PAL, NTSC, MPEG1, VHS, Digital 8, Hi-8, Mini DV, DVCam etc that I have ever got through first time without some technical quibble on some aspect of some of the footage used. I found with Vegas with all its various built in color correction/level/gamma etc etc plugins that I was able to beat most of the non compliant footage into something that could be used, made life one helluva lot easier, thank you Vegas!
Re the timecode thing. Another annoying thing with Vegas, unless there is a way I have missed, is if you digitize free-run TC material into it reads the initial timecode fine and is accurate up to the first camera stop/start. Problem is instead of picking up the new free-run code on the next camera start it just increments onwards from the initial digitized code start. This makes picking synchronous points between two free-run cameras impossible… a right pain! So used to doing this in a linear suite that it seems a big step backwards when it’s not possible in an NLE.

This ‘safe area’ problem is now far more of an issue with the advent of widescreen plasma and lcd monitors and tv’s. A lot of these sets show action well outside of what was considered the 10% safe action for general overscanned tv’s. Most plasma and lcd sets are much closer to the traditional underscan settings for CRT monitors. Make it clean all the way to the edge of the vision raster and you are safe. The sad thing here in Aussie is that for broadcast we are shooting full 16:9 anamorphic yet framing vision safe as 14:9 and graphic safe as 4:3. Roll on the days of all true 16:9.

Try Moosehill Software. Karl Adahl developed a very good quick plugin for doing just what you want. Choose a single color and make the rest B+W.

This problem has been bugging me for some while now. I have now had a bit more of a chance to try and get my head around the problem and seem to have found an answer… so far! I tried a 4 x pic-n-pic over a background with the worst offending material I had. One pic was of fast motion basketball players running with a quick moving camera. Another shot was kids running around in a park playing ball. The third shot was a camera tracking down a covered pathway following people. In this shot the pillars that held the roof up were a nightmare when p-n-pic’ed previously. In fact all three of these clips have all caused problems before. The last shot was just a fairly static group of people sitting around talking which I included to see if any answers to the motion field splitting problem were going to impact on the more static type shots. In the long run it didn’t

This is a problem I have seen crop up every now and again with track motion and even in pan and crop with resize. Working here in PAL also. I have tried every manner of options under ‘properties’ for the clips in questions and no luck I am afraid. All the resample options plus reduce interlace flicker etc and I can’t get rid of the problem. I have also tried blend fields and interpolate in the project properties all to no avail. I have also seen this problem with upper field clips rendered in a lower field project so just check that your field dominance is lower field on the original ingested clips. I notice that this problem when it raise its ugly head is far worse when the clips involved have a lot of fast motion and panning etc, like motor sports which we do a lot of. If anyone has the answer I would love to know what it is.

A long shot here but do you have Canopus Procoder on your machine? If you have check that under ‘Queue Manager’, Tools that ‘Start Kernel with Windows’ is turned ‘off’. There were a few reports around that this was dramatically slowing down some PC’s on start up. I can confirm this as I suffered the same problem. Back to normal since turning it off. It’s also a memory hog and doesn’t need to be started with the Windows bootup. It will start when required if you use the Queue Manager.
