Yes the 35Mbps 420 footage shot on the 300 series 1/2″ XDCam cameras can be played back on a PDW-800 as that camera does support the record mode of 35Mbps 420 as an option besides its 50Mbps 422 default record mode.

A bit late seeing your post but I have successfully used HLG2 and 3 both of which give you a a fair bit more dynamic range than stock Rec 709. In PP10 by default the color mode is 2020 but if you set it to Rec 709 what you will find is that you are getting a much wider dynamic range compressed into a 709 color space. Pretty decent for straight out of the cam footage. The other setting that works quite nicely is setting a profile like PP9 to Gamma Cine 4 and Color Mode to Cinema as a starting point. Not quite as wide a range as HLG2 or 3 but it handles highlights very well. Especially in 422 50 HD.

With either of these PPs you can play around with black levels and chroma levels to taste but it’s best to double check that they are within the bounds of legal if you want a compliant Rec 709 file ready to hand off. I also use variants of these settings on the Sony A7III as it has a very similar range of PPs and we are getting some very nice results out of that.

One point to keep in mind is that HLG 2 tops out at 95% and HLG 3 at 100%. Check out the following URL PDF for info on that. Don’t worry too much about the noise comments re HLG 3 try it out for your self. In lower light where generally you have less dynamic range you can easily drop back to HLG2 if noise becomes an issue.

January 5, 2019 at 4:53 am in reply to: Magix Vegas Pro 16 Update 3 (build 352)

Heard back from Magix on the above issues. Neal Granroth replied with the following info so now we know what is happening in build 352. Looking forward to the update ☺

    “Hello Chris,

Thanks for the heads-up on this issue.

I took a close look at what is happening. It is clear that this is an unintended side-effect of the protective crash-prevention changes that were added to VEGAS Pro 16, update 3 (build 352).

The LUT Filter plugin is being prevented from utilizing the GPU and is instead using the CPU to apply the LUT color adjustments. Use of the GPU to apply the LUT color adjustment is critical for proper playback performance.

We are currently reviewing a set of changes that will correct this.

Thanks again for promptly bringing this to our attention.

    Regards,

    Neal G.”

Thanks John. I’m already posting over there on this issue. This is what I posted:

Exactly, destroyed preview. Win 10 8700k OC’d to 5GHz with GTX 1080 Ti. On this box with v15 build 461 I can play an S-LOG 3 1080 50p timeline with 3D LUts and grades at Best/Full at the full 50 FPs.with around 25-27% CPU usage. Perfect in other words. With v16 b 352 the exact same timeline staggers at around 25-30 Fps with CPU usage running at anywhere where between 96-100% CPU. Don’t know what has happened but I had to go back to v15 b461.

v16 b 307 has the issue where any legacy text on the timeline shows up in Project Media with random icons such as .AVI. If I change file associations in MPC-HC player then the Project Media Legacy Text icons can change to some other type of icon. This was fixed in b352 but sadly the playback issue is a major one. Have notified the Beta team of this. Hopefully hear something fresh in the New Year.

Hopefully a solution will arise in the new year! ☺

    Cheers
    Chris

Just having a strange experience with v16 b352. Since this has been installed playing back an XAVC S-LOG3 HD 50p timeline with 3D LUT and Curves grade the CPU usage has gone through the roof to average around 96-100% and struggles to playback Best Full at 25-30FPs.

The exact timeline, same LUTs and grade in v15 b416 has an average CPU usage of 25-27% at Best Full and plays back at the full 50Fps.

Any ideas anyone? Latest Nvidea drivers installed, v417.35 installed

    Win 10, K8700k OC’d to 5GHz and GTX1080 Ti.

  • Don’t forget that you can create a new specific render template if you so wish and save that. Now restart Vegas and when you go into your Batch Render your new render template will be available under whatever codec family you created it under.

You can also install the free GoPro Studio which installs the Cineform VP5 encoder/decoder on your machine. With that installed you can do all your batch renders to Cineform.avi. The Cineform codec is a very high quality wavelet based codec which runs very smoothly in Vegas. Going way back to HDV days and I think it was maybe in Vegas 8 that Cineform.avi was a standard intermediate editing format. It’s the codec of choice for me for HD and 4K work without a doubt.

As far as I know this tip is undocumented in the help files. Stumbled across it some years back and still use quite often.

If you mean Pavtube MXF Multimixer then yes it will see the XAVC-L MXF files but it appears to be pretty useless if you want to output 1920 50p footage from your original 422 10-bit XAVC-L 50P footage out of the X70.

The only 50P options in Multimixer that I can see are the Avid DNxHD at only 720 50p and AVI HD where you can have 1920 and enter 50P but with only xvid, msmpeg4 or mjpeg choices which are all pretty inferior to the original codec. In the case of the AVI HD it ouputs 8-bit not 10-bit and the audio selection is a pretty basic MP3 and usually distorted.

Sadly not a good option at all.

The only program I know that will truly work is to convert XAVC-L to XAVC-I using TotalCode where you can maintain the original’s full 422 10-bit integrity and can output XAVC-I at 50P. Plus many other codecs should you wish.

Either that or you edit nativly in Edius 7 or the latest version of Premiere Pro CC 2014. Both of which will handle the files fine.

Yes Norman, already done the Catalyst thing. A poor workaround though as it increases your file sizes by over 500% and Catalyst can only export one clip at a time?? What were they thinking with that?
