  • I read on adobe.com that hardware encoding only works with 1 -pass.

i don’t think there’s something exactly the same. perhaps the closet would be the exposure slider in basic lumetri tab.

  • The ACP on the adobe forums says the blacks slider doesn’t work the same way the curves does as it has a knee at 20% IRE. If you want absolute control, I personally wouldn’t even use the sliders. I only use the curves myself. If you want to do some precision shadow recovery such as how to fix impossibly underexposed footage without raising blacks and making a grey mush, a really good trick you can use is transfer modes.

make 3 adjustment layers in a sandwich and set their transfer modes to the following:

    1. normal

    2. multiply

    3. normal

on all 3 layers, use curves and raise the midtones up. don’t touch the black.

Just roll your own. It does the same thing and work in any AE version.

To use the Set Matte effect you need to first pre-compose your lens flare on the black solid layer and move all attributes to the new pre-comp.

Then apply the Set Matte effect to the pre-comp in your main comp and change the “Use For Matte” property to luminance or lightness.

Then change the pre-comp’s blend mode to “Luminescent Premul.”

  • there’s many version of “P3” with different white points. Perhaps a color bars shot preceeding the P3 footage could help narrow down the discrepancy. additionally, video levels vs full levels often get mixed. AE now also has a “view as gamma” feature. Please send a screenshot of your color management settings and view simulate.

I compared them with compress-or-die webchecker and the bigger one has massively detailed transparent data with a ‘dirty’ alpha matte. I don’t know why your encodings are doing that. Try EXR 16 bit lossless compression PIZ mode instead.

track matte and set matte do similar things but in different orders. if you don’t like one, try the other. there’s a super detailed adobe article about it but its so big I just recommended trying them both, lol.

H.264 and AVC mean the same thing. CABAC is only supported in the Main and higher profiles (but not the Base or extended profile).

Adobe Media Encoder uses this entropy encoding by default with the right profile selected.

Just select each option in Adobe Media Encoder.

He just needs to get it working first, then he can play around with making larger/higher quality proxy files… and H.264 is just a container. you can create any compression/quality that you want with including leaving out delta frames for low cpu usage.

This is all just a misconception of the technology. plus if he doesn’t have a lot of space, the proxies could take up most of his drive. Not everyone does this professionally so they may not have the ability to playback larger bitrate codecs because of the hard drive transfer speed limitations.

I would personally prefer Cineform Wavelet compression as it uses less cpu overhead compared to older DCT codecs(H.264 is DCT like both Prores and DnxHD) and has less artifacts. H.264 just got a bad rep because everyone added millions of delta frames and forgot they were optional. In many cases, it can look better than other codecs at similar sizes/bitrates, even at 10 bit. Main 10 is also supported.
