Sounds like you’ll need to motion track the original characters as they move around, and then you should have no problem parenting the new faces to the character’s body. If the faces have a pure white background you may be able to get away with using a transfer mode on your face layers, otherwise you’ll probably need to mask out each face with the pen tool. If the faces are moving, this could take some time as you’ll have to rotoscope each one frame-by-frame.

Haven’t watched that specific tutorial but I believe Particular requires it to be a light. I suppose you could parent the light to a null object and go from there. Glad it’s working though!

Probably the easiest thing to do is to shoot all your actors on a green screen, then key out the green and bring them all in as 3d layers. You can then animate your light (emitter) around them in 3d space, going behind, in front, etc and use that light as your path for Particular.

Another alternative is to use the “Card Wipe” transition. It is a true 3d effect. Set the rows and columns to 1 and then you can specify a front and back layer. Depending on what else is going on in your comp it may introduce some unintended effects though (because it really is only operating on a 2d layer), so be careful.

Oops, let me correct myself… I didn’t read your post closely enough. The “Longevity” Setting will make your particles die faster, but if you want them to actually MOVE faster you’ll need to change the Velocity under Physics.

Play around with the “longevity” setting.

How large is the file? It’s possible that quicktime player can’t read the data off your drive fast enough, or your computer’s bus isn’t fast enough to process all the playback data realtime. If this is the case the problem will go away when you put your reel on DVD or a streamable format.
